What’s with the flapping bird motion? It’s a play on the title of the anime A Couple of Cuckoos (a cuckoo bird switches a bird’s egg with their own in order to have another bird raise it for them).

A Couple of Cuckoos began as a manga series that was written and illustrated by Miki Yoshikawa. In September 2019, it was originally published as a one-shot, and after gaining popularity began its serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in January 2020.

In April 2022, the anime adaptation by Shin-Ei and SynergySP premiered on TV Asashi’s NUMAnimation block. Crunchyroll licensed the series outside of Asia.

On April 11, 2022, Crunchyroll also announced that the series will receive an English Dub. A spin-off mini anime series titled Kakko no Iikagen premiered on April 28, 2022 on YouTube.

On the way to his first meeting with his biological parents, he encounters a popular Internet celebrity named Erika Amano, who is trying to escape from an arranged marriage.

Later, Nagi and Erika discover that their parents had accidentally switched the two after their births and in order to make amends have come up with the harebrained scheme to have their children get married. From a one-shot manga to an anime series getting two cours

When Miki Yoshikawa first published the series as a one-shot manga it was part of a promotion where she would publish three one-shots and readers could vote on which one would receive serialization. After receiving enough votes the series then began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine. A promotional video for the series was released on June 11, 2020 featuring voice actors Yuma Uchida and Maaya Uchida who happen to be siblings!

In April 2021 the anime adaptation was announced. It is animated by Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP and directed by Yoshiyuki Shirahata with Hiroaki Akagi acting as chief director. Aya Takano is creating the character designs while Yasuhiro Nakanishi is overseeing the script. A Couple of Cuckoos will air for two consecutive cours.
