What is the plot of A Girl & Her Guard Dog?
The story centers on a young Japanese high school student named Isaku. When Isaku’s parents died in a car accident when she was 5, her gangster grandfather decided to take her in and raised her as part of the Tasuke Senagaki-gumi (syndicate, clan). Unfortunately, this led to Isaku’s schoolmates avoiding her and shunning her because of her sketchy family ties.
Isaku is determined that when he goes to high school she will keep her family ties a secret in order to have a normal school life, make some friends, and maybe even find love. However, Isaku’s loyal family servant, first lieutenant of the Senagaki-gumi, and dedicated guardian decides to enter high school right alongside her, and vows to protect her – ironically from all the things she wants (especially potential boyfriends).
Not only that, Keiya Uto is a 26-year-old, chain-smoking, pistol-wielding
knight-in-shining armor (scratch that) pain in her butt. Keiya’s only redeeming quality is his handsome face – it’s one of the reasons she developed a one-sided crush on him. What’s a girl to do when she wants to have a normal school life but is hounded by her guardian? And why is Keiya so over-protective of her when he only sees her as a family member even if they’re not blood-related?
The controversy of the age gap genre
In the original Sailor Moon manga and later anime adaptation, high school student Serena (Usagi) fell in love with Darien (Mamoru), who was a college student. However, once Sailor Moon became popular in the U.S. this age gap drew so much controversy that in the 2014 reboot Darien was turned into a high school student to make their romance more acceptable in the eyes of Westerners.
The age of consent in Japan is 13, but what most Westerners don’t understand is a Japanese person that is 13 or 14 can only engage in romantic acts with a person of the same age. A Japanese woman can marry at age 16 (with parental consent) while a Japanese man can marry at age 18. In Japan, if you’re aged 18-20 you’re basically considered a legal adult.
Isaku and Keiya cannot be together romantically (or legally) unless she decides to marry him at age 16 (in Japan, students are typically in their 2nd year of High School at this age), or he could wait until she turns 18 before they can engage in any romantic activities.
Where can I read the manga?
