On August 16, 2022, a collaboration between Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s Blue Period and the high-fashion brand Burberry was announced. A booklet featuring an original story will be given as a limited gift at Burberry stores nationwide starting August 20, 2022.

In the collaboration between Blue Period and Burberry, mangaka Yamaguchi drew an original story that features a new character named Lola. Lola was inspired by one of Burberry’s iconic bags called the “Lola Bag” which was designed by Ricardo Tisci. Lola is basically the personification of the bag.

In the original story, Yatora Yaguchi and Ryuji Ayukawa meet Lola and are influenced by her. If you’re unable to go to a Burberry store, no worries, you can also read a digital version of the booklet at Burberry’s official website here on August 20, 2022.

Since I was born, Burberry has been one of the brands I most admire. I was exposed to the unique fashion brand through TV. When I first heard about the opportunity for a collaboration between Blue Period and Burberry, I was very surprised, and to be honest, I couldn’t believe it at first, and I was worried it might not come to pass. As this collaboration became more real I began to wonder why Burberry chose to collaborate with Blue Period. I came to think that if there is something that can only be done with this manga, which revolves around the world of art, that it should be done, and done right. I was nervous during the collaboration, but thought to myself to think of it as a continuation of my manga. That way the original story would turn out well and I wouldn’t be so intimidated by Burberry. I hope that fans of Blue Period and Burberry will enjoy this collaboration.

Original creator, Tsubasa Yamaguchi, commented at Natalie.mu

From August 20th, in commemoration of the collaboration LINE’s official account will distribute a cellphone wallpaper using illustrations drawn by Yamaguchi. Also, until September 5, 2022, at the Burberry Omotesando, Tokyo store there will be a special event where clients will be able to enjoy artwork from Blue Period.

What is the plot of Blue Period?

The story centers around a high school student named Yatora Yaguchi, who excels in school, and is popular due to his cool attitude and punk “bad boy” appearance. However, his cool façade conceals his real unhappiness, feelings of emptiness, and frustrations with his life. That all changes when he is suddenly inspired by a painting at his high school’s art club to try his hand at painting as a way to express himself.

As time passes, Yatora’s interest in art grows more serious until he decides he wants to apply to the Tokyo University of the Arts as his choice college. At first, those around him have a hard time accepting Yatora’s total change in goals and demeanor, but eventually, come to accept him when they see how serious he is and how talented he is starting to become.
