On October 18, 2022, the staff of the anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s action, comedy, horror, dark fantasy Chainsaw Man (Chensou Man) manga released the ending video. The Chainsaw Man Episode 2 ED features the song “Time Left” (“Zankai”, “Loops”) as performed by ZUTOMAYO.

Chainsaw Man will feature differing ending theme songs for each of its episodes that will be performed by various artists in order to have a song that really embodies the theme and emotions of the episode. Chainsaw Man’s Episode 1’s ending theme song was “Blood on a Chainsaw” (“Chainsaw Blood”) by Vaundy.

ZUTOMAYO’s song “Zankai” perfectly embodies Chainsaw Man Episode 2, which has a very hopeful feeling overall. Denji gets a new job and meets the people he will be working with as a devil hunter – Aki Hayakawa and Power. But in a world filled with devils and duplicitous people, how long will that hope last?

Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni (literally “I wish it was midnight all the time”), stylized as ZUTOMAYO is a Japanese rock band that debuted in 2018. The band has a very secretive nature and has never released a full member list. Each time they release a new song different people are credited for the music, arrangements, and video production.

The only member who consistently participates in their work is the group’s vocalist ACA-Ne (pronounced Akane). ACA-Ne has never shown her face, and her voice is described as being energetic, expressive, and delicate. ACA-Ne also writes the song’s lyrics and handles music composition.

Despite being so secretive the group has been commercially successful and their three Eps reached 8th, 1st, and 2nd on the Oricon Albums Chart. In 2019, they were invited to participate in the Fuji Rock Festival, a year after their debut. During their performance at the Fuji Rock Festival the group performed behind a translucent screen.

ZUTOMAYO  has garnered over 600 million views on YouTube and more than 2.2 million subscribers to their YouTube channel. In 2021, they held a live concert at Makuhari Messe Makuhari Event Hall, and they presented a rather dark “world view”.

Their latest album “Neshi Gesture Shitsurei Kibaeki” ranked No.1 on the Oricon Weekly Album Ranking and Billboard Japan Hot albums. On April 16 and 17, 2022, they will perform a show at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. Their show is called “Eagles Don’t Forget to Dance Even When they Starve”.

What is the plot of Chainsaw Man?

The story is set in a world where devils are born from human fears and are made manifest in reality. The devils tend to be evil and dangerous and are as powerful as the fear they are able to evoke. However, as the need for “Devil Hunters” arose so did the need to form contracts with the devils in order to gain their power and fight fire with fire. The devils usually live in a dimension called “Hell” but when they are killed there they’re transferred to the physical plane of Earth. Once a devil is killed on Earth they return to Hell.

The story centers on an impoverished young man named Denji, who due to the astounding debt his father left behind is struggling to find odd jobs in order to survive. He befriends a dog-like devil named Pochita and together they collect devil corpses to earn money.

However, one day Denji is betrayed and killed. Just as his consciousness is fading he decides to make a contract with Pochita. The devil merges its body with Denji granting him the ability to transform parts of his body into deadly chainsaws. Using his newfound power, Denji joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters – a government agency tasked with fighting devils whenever they become a threat to humanity.
