Odd Taxi’s original anime series was such a success upon its initial release that its feature film performed wonderfully when it appeared in Japanese theaters. But it’s been a while, and worldwide audiences will soon be able to see the picture. With Odd Taxi: In the Woods now on the horizon, the feature film’s synopsis has been updated, hinting at what to expect from the enigmatic new movie.

Crunchyroll has officially revealed its Summer 2022 anime season schedule. They have confirmed that they will be streaming Odd Taxi: In the Woods sometime in the coming months. No firm release date for the new film has been set.

However, they have revealed more of what fans can expect to see from the enigmatic movie. It re-adapts the events of the original anime series and then provides a continuation. A new description provides the best tease for the new film yet.

Odd Taxi: In the Woods’s official description on Crunchyroll begins this way: “Obstinate and taciturn Odokawa cruises through the city as a privately-owned taxi driver, doing his best to avoid associating with others as he lives an ordinary life. However, he is unexpectedly dragged into the Nerima Ward Missing High School Girl case one day. Furthermore, the people around him begin making ominous claims about him, such as hearing voices coming from his apartment when he supposedly lives alone.”

The description continues as follows: “Over 100 million yen, gangsters with mysterious motives, up-and-coming idols, a college student turned celebrity, and various other elements get thrown into the mix as the situation spins out of control. Despite everything, carrying out a certain plan settles the situation all at once. With much sadness and absurdity, the series of events had been resolved… or so it seemed.”

Finally, the synopsis hints at what transpired after the incidents of the first series: “Once the case ended, the people involved testified about what they saw behind the scenes and what happened then. And by tying these together, a new picture of the case emerges. The events that turned one taxi driver’s life upside down change shape, and the gears of the future begin shaking once again.”

Odd Taxi – In The Woods: all you need to know

The Odd Taxi animated series and Odd Taxi: In the Woods film are both set in an anthropomorphic animal world. It follows Odokawa, a middle-aged walrus and cab driver. The anime series, produced by OLM and P.I.C.S., marked the professional debuts of director Baku Kinoshita and screenwriter Kadzuya Konomoto. Both of whom returned to make ODDTAXI: In the Woods. The anime’s principal voice cast, including Natsuki Hanae (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) and Ryhei Kimura (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations), also returned for the compilation film.

It isn’t the first time ODDTAXI and its fans have outperformed the creators. Despite the anime series’ enormous success, there was initial reluctance to release it on Blu-ray. To test demand, the ODDTAXI producers started a pre-order campaign at the end of 2021. If 300 sets got ordered, the ODDTAXI anime would be released on home video.
