What is the plot of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End?

The story centers on a female elven mage named Frieren, who is a former member of the party of adventurers known for having defeated the Demon King and bringing peace back to their world after a ten-year quest. Frieren’s past companions included the human hero Himmel, dwarven warrior Eisen, and human priest Heiter.

After defeating the Demon King, the heroic group watched a meteor shower that occurs once in fifty years — known as the Era Meteors — together and Frieren promised them that the next time they got together during the meteor shower she’d use her magic to provide them all with an even better view.

Frieren leaves in order to travel the world in pursuit of magical knowledge. When she returns to the capital fifty years later, she is startled to find that her former companions have distinctly aged. The heroic party sets out to watch the meteor shower together and Himmel dies of old age after viewing the sight one last time.

During Himmel’s funeral, Frieren expresses her guilt for not having used her short time available with Himmel more wisely and she regrets she didn’t get to know him better when she had the chance. When she goes to visit Heiter, she discovers he’s adopted an orphaned child named Fern. At Heiter’s request, she agrees to care for and teach Fern magic.
