This spring anime season has been filled with a lot of characters rapping to express their feelings, find an easier method of communication, or having epic rap battles with things they want on the line.
Because of this trend anime otaku are dubbing this season “anime rap season”. But where did this trend begin?
Aharen and Raido’s next competition is a rap battle
In episode 4 of Aharen-san wa hakarenai, Raido gets Aharen to listen to a rap CD, and the very next day she starts rapping at him. Raido decides rap could be a good way to communicate with Aharen, but their communication turns into a freestyle rap battle. The winner of their rap battle was unclear and ended in a draw.
Kabe realizes that he needs rap to express his true desires
In Ya Boy Kongming Episode 6, Kongming is trying to get Kabetaijin to partner up with Eiko so they can become a singing duo. Kongming invites Kabe to the BB Lounge, has Eiko sing a nostalgic song that means a lot to Kabe, works his Chinese medicine magic to cure Kabe’s stomach ulcer, and then challenges Kabe to a rap battle.
Kongming manages to get Kabe back on stage (Kabe overcomes his phobia at this point) and inspires him to return to the rapping scene by rapping an old Chinese poem. Kabetaijin wins their rap battle but feels like Kongming deserved to win due to his slip at the end.
Fujiwara is the real MVP for making Shirogane a decent rapper
In Kaguya-sama: Love is War Episode 5, the story revolves around how when Herthaka was forced to listen to Shirogane’s awful rapping she passed out, and when he went to the bathroom she escaped. Because of this, Shirogane goes to Fujiwara and enlists her help to make him become a better rapper.
First, Fujiwara has to become better at rapping herself and studies hard. After she feels confident enough in her rapping skills she moves on to help train Shirogane. This is no easy task and the two of them work hard to get Shirogane to the point where he can “rap decently”.
On the day Shirogane is supposed to meet up with Herthaka after school and rap his feelings to her, Kaguya sneaks after them. Kaguya, Fujiwara, and Herthaka are all present as Shirogane raps his feelings to Herthaka with Fujiwara acting as the MC and asks her what her true desires are.
Before Herthaka has a chance to respond, however, Kaguya breaks in rapping her own feelings, surprising everyone present. A freestyle rap battle begins with Herthaka finally being able to express her true feelings in rap about how she is sick of having to take care of Kaguya all the time and do all these strange tasks for her sake. It’s a definite win for Herthaka.
The episode didn’t end the rapping there, a new ending for Kaguya-sama: Love is war was revealed and all of the characters are rapping and hip-hop dancing in it! Shirogane and Ishigami take to the stage and start rapping first while Fujiwara and Ino end up following them soon after. Another freestyle rap battle ensues. Who won that rap battle? I think that’s up to you, my fellow otaku.
