The Kamen Rider anime franchise is getting a tokusatsu superhero drama series titled Kamen Rider Black Sun. Black Sun will be a reboot of the 1987 series titled Kamen Rider Black that will be co-produced by Ishimori Productions and Toei.
As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Kamen Rider Series, Black Sun is scheduled for a release in Fall 2022 in Japan. On March 19, 2022, it was announced that the filming for the series was finished.
Another upcoming project in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Kamen Rider Series is a film titled Shin Kamen Rider. You can read more about that here: Shin Kamen Rider movie release date in March 2023 revealed by poster, first story summary
In 2019, plans for an adult-aimed Kamen Rider series for the franchise’s 50th anniversary were in the works. When director Kazuya Shiraishi heard about the possible project from Toei producer Taisuke Furuya he immediately expressed his interest in directing the series. Producer Shinichiro Shirakura offered Shiraishi the director role a few months later and revealed more information about it being a reboot of Kamen Rider Black.
Shirakura decided to find an experienced concept artist to help flesh out the visual style since Shiraishi doesn’t have much experience in tokusatsu (Japanese sci-fi, fantasy, or horror films or drama series that use lots of special effects). Shinji Higuichi, who is a veteran tokusatsu director, decided to join the project when he learned of Kazuya Shiraishi’s involvement. Also, joining the team will be Kiyotaka Taguchi who will be the series’ special effects director.
Kamen Rider Black Sun planned to have intense special effects
In preparation for his work on creating Black Sun’s new story, Shiraishi made sure to watch the original Kamen Rider Black. He plans to have the same air of sadness as the original and wants to emphasize the relationship between Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuchi. In Shiraishi’s previous works he’s been known to tackle contemporary social issues within the story and plans to do the same in Black Sun. Even though Toei is aiming for the series to appeal to adult viewers, Shiraishi hopes that it will appeal to children as well.
On April 3, 2021, the 50th anniversary of Kamen Rider’s first broadcast, the Black Sun project was announced at a press conference.
