On September 2, 2022, the staff for the Japanese superduo YOASOBI released a music video featuring the song “The Blessing” (Shukufuku) that is the opening theme song for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which aired its first episode today.

YOASOBI’s staff commented, “Thank you for the [music video] premiere! Like the Gundam series, I hope it will be a work that will be loved for a long time.”

The song “The Blessing” was inspired by the short story “Cradle Star” written by Ichiro Okuchi, which was also released today. You can read the novel here. The story is in Japanese so you’ll have to use Google Translate in order to read it in English.

Nobutaka Yoda of 10GAUGE directed the music video for “The Blessing” with Yutaro Kubota as the animation director. Sunrise and CALF were responsible for the video’s production.

You can watch the music video on YOASOBI’s official YouTube channel here:

The duo’s slogan is, “Novels into music”.

In 2019, YOASOBI’s debut single “Yoru ni Kakeru” went viral on social media and reached No. 1 on Billboard Japan Hot 100 for six non-consecutive weeks and on the 2020 year-end chart. “Yoru ni Kakeru” was the first song to be certified diamond for streaming by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. “Yoru ni Kakeru” is such a popular song among anime fans that it is frequently mistaken for an anime opening or ending song, but it hasn’t been used for an anime yet!
