On August 14, 2022, an official website was launched for the mysterious sci-fi anime project “Project Syn”.

A key visual was released featuring two girls that resemble androids and their rabbit mascot. One of the girls will be played by Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan) while the other girl will be played by Aoi Koga (Kaguya Shinomiya in Kaguya-sama: Love is War).

The official Twitter account for Project Syn (@SYN_noir) teases, “I’m with you.” And merely states that a new science fiction project is in the works and will be set in the year 2222 AD where mankind meets a new “neighbor”. The first self-aware A.I. perhaps? Or a hostile invading alien race?

You can watch the trailer for the project on Emotion Label’s official YouTube channel here:

What is the plot of Project Syn?

The trailer begins with a quote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Arthur C. Clarke.”

Then we see a glimpse of futuristic Japan and suddenly a rabbit mascot character. Then, we see the voice actresses doing cosplay of the characters they will play. Two puppets of the main characters along with their bunny mascot appear.

The designs for a mecha that has a rabbit motif are teased. Next, we see two girls exploring a barren wasteland. One of the girl’s violet eyes appears to be artificial since it is able to zoom in and zoom out – this means one of the girls is a robot, android, or cyborg.

The names of the two mysterious girls are revealed as Ada and Noir. The mecha (battle suit) with the bunny motif is shown fully assembled. Which one of the girls will be its pilot? What are the two girls fighting? An alien race, perhaps?

At the very end, one of the girls asks, “Who am I?” And the other girl responds, “I’m with you.”

For those familiar with the anime Chobits – this video gives a lot of Chi and Freya vibes. In Chobits, Freya was a robot/android who fell in love with her creator. Unable to handle her emotions, Freya “died” and transferred her consciousness into the body of her sister Chi. These two robots/androids truly only had each other and that seems to be the case here with Ada and Noir.

There is also a Blade Runner: Black Lotus vibe to the video since one of the girls is obviously amnesic and will have to discover the mystery behind her true identity.

Is one of these girls human? Or are they both androids/robots/cyborgs? We’ll have to wait for more information from Project Syn in order to find out. What does “Syn” stand for? Synthetic? Synthesize? Many mysteries remain surrounding this interesting, new science fiction project.

Who are the members of the production team?

Character designer Neco (Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka?) and mecha designer Ippei Gyobu (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Nomad: Megalo Box 2, Gundam: G no Reconguista, Gundam Build Divers) are teaming up in Project Syn.
