On September 13, 2022, voice actor Aleks Le tweeted about his vocal performance as Katsuo in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and how one scene was inspired by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime.

Aleks Le commented, “They wanted me to do a Kung Fu style battle cry for the scene [where I kick David’s butt using my cybernetic implants], but I asked if I could give them a JoJo stand rush version. I’m surprised they kept it! ORA ORA ORA!”

Aleks Le went on to comment, “[My performance was] also inspired by Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star anime/manga! That, along with Bruce Lee and Jotaro [from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure], was what I had in my head. We wanted each part of the sequence to sound different to heighten the intensity and playfulness. I loved collaborating with CDPR on this.”

Aleks Le also shared a clip of the scene where Katsuo sends a flurry of punches into David’s face on his official YouTube channel here:

What happened between David and Katsuo?

Katsuo confronts David and says he should leave the Academy because he doesn’t fit in with the other elite students and can’t afford to be there. When David doesn’t back down Katsuo uses his cybernetic implants to show David’s who’s boss and kicks his butt using a flurry of lighting fast punches. Soon afterward, David finds out that his mother’s condition worsened even after having survived the traffic accident and surgery.

David’s mother Gloria dies and right after that Katsuo calls to make a “sympathy call” where he just ends up insulting David’s mother instead. With his mother dead, completely broke, and enraged by Katsuo’s hurtful words David decides not to sell the Sandevistan (military-grade cybernetic spine implant) that ended up in his possession and decides to keep it.

David goes to his Ripperdoc Doc and has him install the Sandevistan into his own body. Doc reluctantly agrees to install it, but only if he gets to keep the Sandevistan in the event that David dies while trying to use it. David survives the surgery and is granted enhanced speed and reflexes. With his newfound strength, David returns to school and in the middle of class decides to take revenge on Katsuo by beating him up.

Katsuo’s father, Tanaka, an Arasaka executive, realizes David is able to utilize the Sandevistan with no apparent side effects while its previous user went insane. Tanaka decides David would make a valuable test subject and tells the principle to tell David he has been granted a scholarship in order to be able to keep tabs on him. Tanaka also decides that his wayward son needs to be put in his place.

As someone, who has only watched the first four episodes, I’m very curious to see if Tanaka will install cybernetic implants into his son Katsuo, and how that will turn out. I have the feeling that Katsuo won’t be able to handle the implant, will go “psycho”, and turn into a villain that David will end up having to defeat. I’m looking forward to Aleks Le’s vocal performance in the rest of the episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunner.
