On August 23, 2022, Netflix Japan tweeted an announcement that it is producing a new South Korean live-action adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte (Kiseiju) manga titled Parasyte: The Grey.

The tweet also revealed that Train to Busan and Peninsula director, Yeon Sang-ho, will direct the series!

Although a release date is not yet known Netflix plans to stream the series exclusively worldwide. Three of the series’ cast members have also been revealed: Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun.

Writing the series’ script is Ryu Yong-jae known for his work on Peninsula and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.

The upcoming series is inspired by the manga, but will tell its own original story set in the Parasyte universe where an alien race known as parasytes have come to Earth and started to take over humans. The aliens enter a human body through their nose or ears and attach themselves to their brains. They consider humans to be “food”.

Joen plays Jeong Su-in, who is attacked by a parasyte, but it fails to take her over properly and she starts a strange life of co-existence with it.

In the original story the main hero, Shinichi Izumi, is also attacked by a parasyte, but it’s unable to take over his brain and only manages to take over his right hand. The hero names the parasyte “Migi” which means “right” in Japanese, and together they start battling against humans whose brains have been completely taken over by parasytes.
