Reiji Miyajima’s romcom Rent-A-Girlfriend anime/manga is inspiring a live-action TV series that will premier in July 2022.
The Asashi Broadcasting Corporation TV channel will air the series on Sundays at 11:55 PM. TV Asashi will air the show on Saturdays at 2:30 AM.
The production team includes director Daisuke Yamamoto known for Ossan’s Love franchise (TV Asahi series) and scriptwriter Kumiko Aso, known for their work on Marumo no Okite (Fuji TV series).
Ryusei Onishi, who is a member of the idol group Naniwa Danshi and has starred in the live-action Seiho Boy’s High School! will play the role of the protagonist Kazuya Kinoshita. Hiyori Sakurada, who starred in the live-action Tokyo Ghoul and Twilight, will play the role of the heroine Chizuru Mizuhara.

Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 anime teasers reveal Chizuru will have competition for Kazuya’s heart
In July 2017, the Rent-A-Girlfriend manga started its serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. On August 17, 2020, the manga series received an anthology.
On July 10, 2020, the anime adaptation of the manga made its premiere and ran for 12 episodes. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the first anime season.
The Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 release date is in July 2022. The TV show will be airing on the Super Animeism programming block on MBS, TBS, and 26 affiliates.
A trailer has been released for the upcoming second season of the anime, which features Sumi, one of the Rent-A-Girlfriends.
Rent-A-Girlfriend live-action TV show story summary
If you haven’t already read the manga or watched the anime adaptation, the story begins when Kazuya Kinoshita is dumped by his girlfriend, Mami Nanami, on their one-month anniversary. Due to being unpopular with the ladies because of his indecisive personality, Kazuya decides to use an online dating app to find a temporary fake girlfriend and stumbles upon Chizuru Mizuhara’s profile.
She appears to be a beautiful and attractive young woman, but he finds her acting to be inauthentic and gives her a low rating on the dating app website. The next time Kazuya meets up with Chizuru she reveals that she’s not as sweet and demure as she was acting and scolds him for giving her a low rating.
When Kazuya’s grandmother collapses one day and is hospitalized, he decides to bring Chizuru along with him. His grandmother is immediately taken with Chizuru and thinks she’s the perfect girlfriend for Kazuya.
Due to his grandmother’s approval of Chizuru, Kazuya is forced to continue to rent Chizuru in order to keep up appearances with his family and friends that he has a girlfriend. In a strange twist of fate, they find out that they actually live next to each other and are attending the same college. The story gets more complex with other girls from the online dating app becoming involved in their lives.
