On September 30, 2022, the visual novel developer Nitroplus and distributor Shochiku revealed that they’re teaming up to release a new original samurai TV anime series titled Revenger.
The official Twitter account for Revenger also revealed a key visual, featuring the hero of the story, a handsome and mysterious samurai, which can be seen here:
A trailer teasing the upcoming anime has also been released and can be seen here:
In the trailer the samurai states, “I am forced to slay people…in order to resist a cruel fate.” Is the samurai an assassin? Or maybe he’s a ronin (masterless samurai) who is now working as a mercenary? What cruel fate is he trying to run away from?
With a title like “Revenger” it makes one wonder who is getting the revenge, exactly. Is the samurai out for revenge or are people hunting him down to get their own revenge?
Information about the anime’s story, cast, and staff should be coming soon!
What is Nitroplus most known for?
Nitroplus Co., Ltd., (also known as NITRO PLUS) is a Japanese visual novel video game developer that has developed a number of visual novels, including eroge (erotic video games). It’s interesting to note that DMM and Nitroplus teamed up to release the popular web browser game Touken Ranbu in January 2015, which has a lot of shonen ai “boy’s love” elements.
Nitroplus also teamed up with Chiral Branch Works to release the boys-love games: Togainu no Chi (Feburary 25, 2005/May 29, 2008), Lamento –Beyond the Void- (November 10, 2006), Sweet Pool (December 19, 2008), DRAMAtical Murder (March 23, 2012), DRAMAtical Murder re:connect (April 26, 2013), and Slow Damage (February 25, 2021).
Due to these facts, fans of Touken Ranbu and DRAMAtical Murder are already wondering if Revenger will have some “boy’s love” elements in it. It’s highly likely that there will be very close friendships between men in the anime.
Although, one of Nitroplus’ most popular anime is their action, dystopia, and political thriller Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas, so Revenger may end up being similar to that anime. Smile of Arsnotoria (March 2, 2021) is another well-known anime they are responsible for.
Nitroplus also collaborated with developer Type-Moon to create the light novel series Fate/Zero. Nitroplus’s works are known for having dark elements, such as the reanimation of the dead, rape, and murder. Their branch Nitro+Chiral focuses on boys’ love visual novels that tend to have dark themes.
Gen Urobuchi, one of Nitroplus’s top writers, has also contributed to various manga, anime, novels, and TV works.
A cute pink-haired girl, who is usually seen wearing headphones, is Nitroplus’s mascot character named Super Sonico (no relation to the hedgehog).
During Nitroplus’ annual music festival event “Nitro Super Sonico” their mascot Super Sonico helms the event. Since 2000 Nitroplus has held the music festival, but it was only starting in 2006 that Super Sonico became the event’s mascot. Nitroplus’ original mascot character was called Ouka Satsurikuin.
