The Revenger release date is confirmed for January 2023, the Winter 2023 anime season.

Revenger will be streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide (except Asia).

On October 28, 2022, the staff for visual novel developer Nitroplus and distributor Shochiku’s Revenger original anime revealed its main cast and character designs. Revenger is set to premiere in January 2023!

You can watch the most recent trailer, which features the silver-haired leader of the assassin organization Revenger, Yuen Usui, and his first encounter with Raizo Kurima.

Revenger anime second trailer.

In the trailer, master assassin Usui Yuen is investigating a series of assassinations against the grand samurai clan, the Satsuma. That’s when he encounters Kurima Raizo, who is a member and survivor of one of the attacks.

Usui decides to recruit Raizo for his organization Revenger and together they continue to investigate the truth behind these murders and discover it’s bigger than “stolen resources”. As they get closer to the truth things get even more dangerous. Will they manage to survive so they can exact their revenge?

Who are the newly announced cast members?

Revenger cast members include:

  • Hisako Kanemoto – Nio
  • Yuichiro Umehara – Yuen Usui
  • Jun Kasama – Raizo Kurima
  • Shunsuke Takeuchi – Teppa Murakami
  • Shouta Hayama – Soji

The character I play, Raizo, is stubborn and strangely pure and innocent. One would think that his naivete would make him easily influenced by others, but that’s not the case. Because the story is set in the Edo era where the “way of the samurai” is accepted and praised by society Raizo is able to maintain a “pure adult” charm as he tries to live as an “honorable samurai”. However, his way of life greatly binds him. I look forward to seeing how Raizo will live with his pride and dignity as a samurai.

What is the plot of Revenger?

The story is set during the Edo period in Nagasaki, and centers on the brooding Raizo Kurima, who was betrayed by someone he trusted and consequently lost his home. He is recruited by Yuen Usui to become a part of a secret assassin organization called Revenger, which takes revenge on behalf of those who have no power.

During the day, Raizo works at a general store called Ribenjiya, which serves as a cover and base of operations for Revenger. His coworkers include the physician with destructive impulses Teppa Murakami, the cruel yet boyishly innocent Nio, the gambling alcoholic Soji, and an intelligent lacquer craftsman, Yuen Usui. These five men begin to build a strange friendship by working together and sharing the secret of having dual lives.

The character I play, Yuen Usui, is a man who wears a mask as he talks to people in different walks of life. I find it difficult to find out what he really means sometimes. Yuen is good at calming finding the best course of action, but he’s not cold-hearted. He has a heart. There’s definitely a gab between his gentle demeanor and his deadliness as an assassin, which makes him a fun character to play. There are certain lines that are sure to leave an impression.

What is Nitroplus most known for?

Nitroplus Co., Ltd., (also known as NITRO PLUS) is a Japanese visual novel video game developer that has developed a number of visual novels, including eroge (erotic video games). One of Nitroplus’ most popular anime is their action, dystopia, and political thriller Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas, so Revenger may end up being similar to that anime. Smile of Arsnotoria (March 2, 2021) is another well-known anime they are responsible for.

Nitroplus also collaborated with developer Type-Moon to create the light novel series Fate/Zero. Nitroplus’s works are known for having dark elements, such as the reanimation of the dead, rape, and murder. Their branch Nitro+Chiral focuses on boys’ love visual novels that tend to have dark themes.

Gen Urobuchi, one of Nitroplus’s top writers, has also contributed to various manga, anime, novels, and TV works.

The character I play, Nio, is good with his hands and makes a lot of kites. He is the youngest assassin and appears to be childishly innocent. He really enjoys life and strange things and I want to show that in my vocal performance. There are some tense scenes where Nio doesn’t read the atmosphere but that serves to make things more relaxed.

Shochiku and “loner” directors team up

The Shochiku Company, Limited is a Japanese film and kabuki production and distribution company. It is known for distributing anime films by Bandai Namco Filmworks. Shochiku’s most well-known directors include Yasujirou Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Youji Yamada. Shochiku has also produced films by unique independent directors such as Takashi Miike, Takeshi Kitano, Akura Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, and Taiwanese New Wave director Hou Dsiao-hsien.

Shochiku is one of the four members of the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPAJ), and one of the oldest of Japan’s “Big Four” film studios.

The character I play, Soji, reminds me of a “neighborhood” older brother, who is someone you can always rely on despite his sloppiness. He’s the type of person who lives for his own sake without regard for anything else and I’m jealous of that power that seems to effortlessly pull them along. I think the way Soji views life is different from the other members of Revenger. Soji is good with kids, and he’s definitely the one to point out the cold, hard truth in certain scenes. He’s definitely a great older brother to Nio. I hope you will enjoy my vocal performance.
