What is the plot of Sakamoto Days?
The story centers on a man named Taro Sakamoto, who used to be an unrivaled hitman, which earned him legendary status in the Japanese criminal underworld. But one day, he had a chance encounter with a woman working at a convenience store and fell in love with her at first sight. He bravely asked the beautiful young woman out on a date, and they started dating. It wasn’t long before they got married and Sakamoto retired, growing overweight as a result.
Sakamoto is content to live out the rest of his days as a humble convenience store owner, but his past has other plans and continues to haunt him. When his daughter is put in danger Sakamoto has no choice but to awaken the sleeping dragon within and fight to protect his humble life and family – or die trying. Unexpected help comes in the form of his loyal employee, Shin, who happens to have telepathy.
Who are the main characters?
Taro Sakamoto is an ex-hitman who gave up a life of wealth and crime to marry the woman he fell in love with – Aoi. Although, he has gained a lot of weight due to his leisurely lifestyle he still has his superhuman skills and strength from his hitman days. During extreme situations, the stress causes Sakamoto to suddenly lose weight and when he becomes skinny he is twice as powerful as usual.
Shin Asakura is a former hitman, who admires Sakamoto and is now his employee at the convenience store, which Sakamoto runs. His nickname is “Shin the Clairvoyant” due to the fact he can read minds. When he annoys Sakamoto he knows when Sakamoto is envisioning killing him and this is a “running gag” in the manga.
Lu Xiaotang is the air-headed daughter of a Chinese mob boss. However, she can be analytical and competent when the occasion calls for it. She isn’t seen doing very much fighting but when she does she’s actually pretty tough. She has a fighting style which mixes Tai Chi and Drunken Fist.
Fans have wanted an anime adaptation for a while
In 2021, Sakamoto Days was nominated for Best Print Manga in the Next Manga Awards, and placed 9th out of 50 nominees and won the U-Next Prize. In 2022, it ranked 6th in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics list.
