What is the plot of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale?
The story is set in a medieval, sword-and-sorcery world where long ago, a fairy king ruled the land. The Kingdom of Highland was known as “the country that stands above all others”. During this time, humans didn’t know how to use fire or fight and lacked wisdom.
The fairies pursued beautiful things and entertainments, and lived in peace for hundreds of years, but before they knew it, humans began using fire and showing signs of intelligence. 500 years ago, humans evolved and took control of Highland, but not only that – they decided to control the fairies as their slaves.
The story centers on a young 15-year-old confectioner named Anne Halford. Anne’s mother told Anne that the fairies of their time weren’t to be hated but pitied. The fairies were the ones that invented candy so confectioners have a great respect for fairies. Anne’s mother also advised her daughter that fairies are worthy of friendship instead of scorn.
When Anne’s mother dies she decides to leave the village on her own in order to attend the one-yearly candy fair in the Kingdom’s Capital of Lewiston. Anne wants to become a “Silver Sugar Master” like her mother. Silver Sugar candy is a sacred food that has the ability to extend a fairy’s life and bestow good fortune on a human.
Unfortunately, the road to Lewiston is very dangerous and rife with bandits, so Anne decides she doesn’t really have a choice but to purchase a warrior fairy that can serve as her escort. Anne travels to the provincial Capital Redington where she encounters the bad-tempered, dark-haired fairy warrior Shalle (Challe).
Shalle immediately insults Anne by saying she looks like a scarecrow because she’s tall and thin. The slave trader decides to give Anne a deal due to the warrior fairy’s nasty attitude and offers him for a single gold piece! The slave trader explains to Anne how to control the fairy by using his wing.
A fairy can live without his or her wing detached from their body, but a fairy’s wing is like their heart. If you squeeze the fairy’s wing it is the equivalent to squeezing their heart and will cause great fear and pain. If a fairy’s wing is destroyed the fairy will die. Anne decides “beggars can’t be choosers” and purchases Shalle despite how dangerous he might be. Anne is determined to become Shalle’s friend, but Shalle’s hatred towards humans will make things difficult indeed. Will Anne be able to win Shalle over and become friends with him? Or will he ultimately betray her in order to gain his freedom?
