Sword Art Online is without a doubt one of the most well-known examples of Isekai, with the light novel series transferring the stories of Kirito, Asuna, Alice, and others into the realm of anime throughout several television seasons and feature-length films.

The series revisited the earlier days of Kirito and Asuna via the Sword Art Online Progressive sequel flicks.

The upcoming Scherzo of a Dark Dusk has released a new teaser in anticipation of its September 2022 release.

Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk is set to be released in Japan this fall, but no international release plans have been announced as of this writing.

Given that this spin-off series was initially intended to throw more light on the floors Kirito and Asuna had visited during the Aincrad arc (which was skipped over in the first anime for convenience reasons), many fans find it strange that this sequel will skip one of the arcs. There are few specifics regarding prospective new characters or story elements which has inspired the most fan speculation.

Sword Art Online Progressive sequel films

The first film adaption, produced by A-1 Pictures (Darling in the Franxx) and helmed by Ayako Kono (Your Lie in April), premiered in October 2021 and earned over $14 million at the global box office. The story of Aria of a Starless Night is mostly about Asuna’s struggles with dealing with the complexities of being stuck in a virtual world that will kill her in real life if she dies inside the game.

Along with Kono, several members of the original film’s creative crew have reunited for the sequel. Character designer and principal animation director Kento Toya (The Seven Deadly Sins) and composer Yuki Kajiura (Fena: Pirate Princess) are among those involved. In addition, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) and Haruka Tomatsu (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) reprise their roles as Kirito and Asuna.

Fans of Sword Art Online have more to look forward to than only the release of Scherzo of Deep Night. Preorders for a 20-disc special collection commemorating the tenth anniversary of the isekai anime are currently being accepted. Sword Art Online’s first two seasons, the 2017 film Ordinal Scale, and credit-free variations of the opening and closing sequences will all be included in the box set. It will also have a feature-length special called Sword Art Online-Extra Edition and commentary tracks featuring chibi versions of the main actors.
