Slam Dunk: The inspirational sports classic

Many anime programs fade into obscurity after their first airing, but Slam Dunk is one of the few that is still cherished and talked about 25 years after its conclusion. This was demonstrated by the announcement of a new Slam Dunk animated film, which sparked a flurry of excitement among fans – an incredible feat for such an old series.

Slam Dunk began as a manga written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, the creator of the famed samurai series Vagabond. From 1993 to 1996, the series was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, producing a 101-episode anime from Toei Animation, four animated films, and a slew of video games for both consoles and arcades. By 2014, the manga had sold over 121 million copies. Volumes 21-23 held the record for the greatest original print runs for any manga for a while, with 2.5 million copies each (One Piece Volume 24 broke that record in 2002).

Hanamichi Sakuragi, a young, unlucky-in-love delinquent gang leader, is the series’s protagonist. He encounters the girl of his dreams, Haruko Akagi when he transfers to a new high school. Haruko introduces Sakuragi to the school’s basketball squad, believing he would fit in well. Sakuragi initially resists, but after a few practices, he is persuaded to go and demonstrates a natural affinity for the sport. As a result, Sakuragi and his band of misfits compete in competitions throughout Japan.

Slam Dunk is the basketball anime, not simply a basketball anime. Nothing has come close to matching the intensity and emotion of this timeless classic. It’s simple to see why fans are still eager for more after all these years. Hopefully, the new movie lives up to the expectations and brings new fans to the original great.
