What is the plot of Slam Dunk?

The story centers on a Japanese high school student named Hanamichi Sakuragi, who is infamous for his temper, massive height, and fire-red hair. When he enrolls in Shohoku High he hopes that he’ll finally manage to get a girlfriend since he was rejected 50 times in middle school due to his intimidating appearance.

However, his notoriety precedes him and his classmates avoid him out of fear. After a series of events occur he’s left with the thought that he hates basketball and he really wants a girlfriend. One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi bravely approaches him and curiously asks if he likes basketball. Hanamachi falls head over heels in love with Haruko and blurts out that he loves basketball.

Haruko drags him to the gymnasium and innocently requests him to do a slam dunk. In order to impress Haruko Hanamichi gives it a shot but is so nervous he ends up slamming his head straight into the backboard. Haruko immediately informs the basketball team’s captain of Hanamichi’s crazy physical strength and he’s suddenly recruited for the team. Hanamichi is drawn into the camaraderie and competition of the sport that he had previously hated. But will he ever get a girlfriend?
