The second season concludes the war against the Spirit Tortoise and the first arc of the new season. The Book Hero from L’Arc, Glass, and Therese’s planet was attempting to amass souls for some sinister purpose. While he had been stopped, for the time being, he had escaped back to their home world before Naofumi could destroy him. Naofumi and his party launch their invasion of this new realm in the last moments of the arc.

The first season showed that Naofumi and the heroes’ true enemies were the heroes from another world. They shockingly returned in the second season to aid in the defeat of the Spirit Tortoise. Even though he wishes to destroy Naofumi’s universe, they believed that forcing the guardian to activate, as the Book Hero did, was something their various heroic weapons did not want. They want a heroic victory, so they end up assisting Naofumi and the others in defeating the Book Hero and saving the world for the time being.

The Rising of the Shield Hero production, staff, and more

Kinema Citrus, the studio producing Made in Abyss and Black Bullet, created the first season of The Rising of the Shield Hero’s anime adaptation. The first season aired for 25 episodes spanning January and June 2019. The show sparked debate in North America due to its use of a false rape charge and slavery in its plot. It went on to establish a devoted fan base and was largely well-received by critics. Raphtalia was the winner of the Best Girl award at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

Season 2’s The Rising of the Shield Hero was co-produced by DR Movie and Kinema Citrus. While several members of the first season’s creative team returned for the season 2, including writer Keigo Koyanagi (Sirius the Jaeger) and character designer Masahiro Suwa (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance), Masato Jinbo (Restaurant to Another World) took over as director from Takao Abo (Scorching Ping Pong Girls).
