Like many others in the anime/manga business, an English publisher’s staff will unionize in order to strive for improved compensation and working conditions.
Seven Seas’ new staff union
The new Union declared its formation on Twitter and a mission statement outlining the workers’ concerns and objectives.
“We are overworked, underpaid, and inadequately supported. Furthermore, we do not receive the standard perks of the publishing sector. Extras such as vacation, sick days, family leave, health insurance, and retirement, “the Union stated.
The statement says, “We want to provide the finest products possible, and the best way to do it is to pay a living wage, use good hardware and software, and have a well-organized digital workplace. As a union, we seek to negotiate better working conditions for both Seven Seas employees and the many freelancers who make what we do possible. We look forward to your support and solidarity.”
It is a movement reminiscent of the one seen a few months ago by the staff of Image Comics. This independent publisher has seen how its employees have banded together to demand more significant compensation and employment rights. It is a trade union movement representing non-creative employees or those that make the publishing firm run daily.
Seven Seas Entertainment
Jason DeAngelis launched Seven Seas, one of the longest-running manga publishers in the United States, in 2004. It has grown significantly in recent years due to the increased popularity of manga in the United States; earlier this month, they debuted new girls’ love and guy’s love lines. They’ve also released critically acclaimed works.
The publisher Seven Seas also localizes various Chinese Danmei series. This Chinese Danmei series includes the renowned Heaven Official’s Blessing and The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System and manga such as Tokyo Revengers and Skeleton Knight in Another World. Seven Seas Entertainment allegedly got chastised for changing the English localizations of popular light novel series such as Classroom of the Elite and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation to exclude controversial content such as homophobic references or scenes of sexual assault.
Tokyo Revengers became a blockbuster hit after its debut in the summer of 2021. The Tokyo Revengers Season 2 anime TV show is already confirmed to be in production.
The story of Tokyo Revengers follows Takemichi Hanagaki, a lower-class worker whose life is already at an all-time low. Then it gets worse when he learns that his high school lover got murdered. As a result, he travels back in time and decides to join the Tokyo Manji Gang. Takemichi Hanagaki did this to prevent the events that led to her death.
