On June 22, 2022, the official Twitter account for TONIKAWA announced that “love is in the air this summer” and a special episode for the franchise is coming to Crunchyroll!

Fans of the anime series were left hanging at the end of Season 1, but TONIKAWA Season 2 has been confirmed to be in production. A new visual for the special episode teases that we might finally get to see the long-awaited wedding between Nasa Yuzaki and Tsukasa Yuzaki… sort of. The special episode is called “Uniform (Seifuku)” so the story is probably focused on cosplay, not an actual wedding.

The fantasy rom-com anime TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You was inspired by the Japanese manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kenjiro Hata (Hayate the Combat Butler). Since February 2018, the manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, and the manga’s chapters have been collected into 20 volumes.

The manga’s English version has been licensed by Viz Media in North America and so far 11 volumes have been released. From October to December 2020, an anime television series adaptation by Seven Arcs aired on Tokyo MX in Japan and other channels.

Hiroshi Ikehata directed the anime series with Kazuho Hyodo in charge of the series’ script. Masakatsu Sasaki handled character design and Endo composed the music. The opening theme song titled “Koi no Uta” (Love Song) was performed by Akari Kito and the ending theme song titled “Tsuki to Hoshizora” (Moon and Starry Sky) was performed by KanoeRana.

What is the plot of TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You?

The story begins when on a snowy winter’s night; a young man with the odd name of Nasa Yuzaki encounters a beautiful, otherworldly girl just after he’s received his practice exam grades for high school. Deciding that fate has given him this golden opportunity to talk to her he rushes out into the street after her, only to put himself in harm’s way in front of a truck. Luckily, the girl notices the sudden danger he’s in and manages to save him.

Afterward, Nasa follows the girl to a bus stop and is inspired to suddenly confess his love for her. The girl, Tsukasa Tsukuyomi, is startled at first, but eventually agrees to become his girlfriend, but only if they are married first. Nasa instantly agrees to this condition. When Tsukasa disappears after their encounter, however, Nasa searches for her for years until time passes and it’s suddenly his 18th birthday.

While Nasa is celebrating his birthday alone and thinking about the promise he made to Tsukasa she suddenly shows up at his doorstep with a marriage form. Thus begins their new life together as a “happily married couple”.

Is Tsukasa Tsukyomi human? Immortal? An alien?

One of the most interesting things about this anime is the mystery behind Tsukasa Tsukyomi. At first, she appears to be a normal girl, but there are hints throughout the series that she may not be human. Starting with the way she was able to save Nasa from the truck and while she did sustain some injuries it appears as though she possesses superhuman strength.

The anime often compares Tsukasa to Princess Kaguya – the moon princess from Japanese folklore. In the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Kaguya eventually leaves her husband and goes to the moon. This may explain why Nasa seems to be worried about Tsukasa leaving him all the time.

It’s interesting to note that when Tsukasa lived her with aunt there was a moon rock under their protection and the aunt claimed this rock “eased Tsukasa”. Is that because Tsukasa is originally from the moon? Is she Princess Kaguya or her reincarnation? Maybe she was sent to Earth to search for the real Kaguya or her reincarnation in order to bring her back to the moon. What is Tsukasa’s connection to Princess Kaguya or the moon people? Is Tsukasa immortal?

A lot of facts in the anime point to the fact that Tsukasa is immortal. For example, when Tsukasa talks about Japanese history she makes it sound as if she were there to experience those events. Also, when she saved her friend on the cliff side her friend said she was sixteen at the time, but this was many years ago and Tsukasa is still sixteen. It’s also interesting to note that Nasa met Tsukasa on the night of the full moon. There have also been hints that Tsukasa’s purple hair ornament possesses powers of some kind, but we haven’t seen those powers yet.
