The Fall 2022 anime season has begun, and all eyes are on the upcoming releases. After all, this will be one of the busiest seasons in recent years. Plenty of hits are on the way, from Mob Psycho 100 to Blue Lock, and Urusei Yatsura has been promoting its return.

Sumire Uesaka, the voice actress of Lum the Invader Girl cosplayed her character to promote Urusei Yatsura’s return.

Photos of Uesaka’s cosplay were published in Weekly Shonen Sunday Issue 45, 2022, the same magazine that ran the original Urusei Yatsura manga.

The cover of this issue also displays crossover artwork of Lum and Mao, the protagonists of Rumiko Takahashi’s dark fantasy manga of the same name. MAO debuted in Weekly Shonen Sunday in May 2019, and, unlike many of Takahashi’s other series, it has not been adapted into an anime.

Urusei Yatsura 2022 reboots a famous anime series

The original Urusei Yatsura anime series ran on Fuji Television for 195 episodes from October 1981 to March 1986. The relaunch, dubbed Urusei Yatsura All-Stars, will be animated by David Production and will adapt selected stories from Takahashi’s manga, which premiered in 1978 and ended in 1987.

All-Stars will debut on Fuji TV’s Noitamina programming block on October 13, 2022. It will run for a full year, or four seasons (quarters of a year.) In Japan, the first two cours will be shown continuously. In October 2022, HIDIVE and the Shanghai-based video-sharing site Bilibili will begin streaming the show. The Urusei Yatsura Season 2 release date hasn’t been announced yet.

The plot of Urusei Yatsura centers around Ataru Moroboshi, a lustful young lad whose life is turned upside down when a humanoid species of aliens from the planet Oniboshi attack Earth. Ataru is chosen at random to defend his planet by defeating Lum, a scantily clad alien princess, in a game of tag. Ataru battles and wins against her, but after Lum misunderstands Ataru’s victory cry as a marriage proposal, she aggressively pursues Ataru from that day forward, despite the fact that he is happily engaged to his childhood friend Shinobu Miyake.

While Sumire Uesaka plays Lum Invader, Urusei Yatsura’s other characters are played by a variety of notable voice actors. Ataru Moroboshi is played by Hiroshi Kamiya (Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Kuroko’s Basketball). Shinobu Miyake is played by Maaya Uchida (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma). Shuutaro Mendou (Free!-Iwatobi Swim Club) is played by Mamoru Miyano, the scion of Earth’s richest family who is in love with Lum and hence regards Ataru as his greatest adversary. Kana Hanazawa (Psycho-Pass, Durarara!!) plays Lum’s childhood buddy Ran, and Rikiya Koyama (Naruto Shippuden) plays “Mr. Invader,” Lum’s father and the great oni warlord who launched the invasion of Earth.

While the original Urusei Yatsura anime series is not available on any major streaming sites, Crunchyroll has all six Urusei Yatsura animated films. VIZ Media publishes the manga in English.
