Voice actor Billy Kametz passed away at 35 from colon cancer: English dub VA played Shield Hero’s Naofumi, JoJo’s Josuke, 86’s Shin, and more

Voice actor Billy Kametz’s death on June 9, 2022. Since his cancer diagnosis in April 2022, Kametz had been fighting Stage 4 colon cancer and he passed away on June 9, 2022.

The organizers of the cancer GoFundMe campaign for the voice actor made the announcement. Kametz was renowned for his amazing portrayals of Naofumi in The Rising of Shield Hero, Josuke in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable and Galo Tymos in the movie Promare.

The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long

Kametz passed at age 35. On April 26, 2022, when Kametz revealed that he had been diagnosed with colon cancer his fans were saddened to hear that he would be taking a break from his incredible voiceover work and that other voice actors would temporarily replace him for current and ongoing roles. Kametz moved back to Pennsylvania to be with his family.

A few days after his announcement, a GoFundMe campaign was launched online, and the money raised from his fans went towards travel, insurance costs, medical bills not covered by insurance, and everyday life necessities. The goal was to raise $150,000 US and the campaign surpassed that, earning $175,126 for Kametz.

The campaign will be closing on June 14, 2022. Anything contributed that wasn’t already used for Kametz’s treatments will go towards his funeral and celebration of his life and legacy. The funeral will be held by Kametz’s family on June 18, 2022. There will be a viewing on June 15, 2022.

Any contribution made to the Colon Cancer Coalition in Kametz’s honor will be greatly appreciated by his family.

A tragic loss for friends, family, and the anime community

Billy Kametz was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1987. He was raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

In 2016, Kamtez moved to Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles where he showed off his talent in singing and acting by starring as Aladdin in Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular. Kametz’s obituary states that he dreamed of becoming an actor since he was a kid and got his break with Disney as an entertainment staff member on a Disney Cruise line before he nabbed the role of Aladdin.

While living in California, Kametz turned his attention toward voice acting and landed many major roles. In 2020, Kametz won Best VA Performance (English) Award at the 4th Crunchyroll Anime Awards for his portrayal of Naofumi Iwatani in the anime The Rising of Shield Hero.

Around this time, a star-crossed love between him and fellow voice actress Erica Lindbeck began. And she is obviously devastated by this tragic turn of events.

Erica tweeted that she will be in love with Billy Kametz for the rest of her life.

Some of Kametz other memorable performances were his portrayal of White Blood Cell in the anime Cells at Work! And Rui in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Kametz’s passing is a great loss for the anime community, but his legacy will live on in the work he’s left behind for his fans to continue to enjoy.
