The Penguindrum anime and ensuing manga series

Re:cycle of the Penguindrum: Kimi no Ressha wa Seizon Senryaku and Re:cycle of the Penguindrum: Boku wa Kimi wo Aishiteru are two-part compilation films inspired by the original TV anime series Penguindrum, or Mawaru Penguindrum (輪るピングドラム) as they are known in Japan.

The 24-episode series ran from July 8, 2011, to December 23, 2011. Written by Kunihiko Ikuhara and Takayo Ikami and co-directed by Ikuhara and Shouko Nakamura, the anime series follows the Takakura family.

Himari Takakura, a terminally ill girl, is saved by a penguin-hat spirit. In exchange for his ‘service,’ the spirit asks Himari’s brothers Kanba and Shoma to find a mysterious item known as the Penguindrum. The brothers are accompanied by a trio of penguins.

Two years after the anime series premiered (May 2013), a manga adaptation by Isuzu Shibata began serialization in Comic Birz, and ended in January 2017. The series has been collected in five tankōbon volumes.

Seven Seas Entertainment holds the license for the series’ English release.
