The Sugar Apple Fairy Tale anime adaptation of the eponymous light novel series has been announced for a 2023 premiere, with the exact date yet to be disclosed.
The news has been backed up by the release of a teaser trailer, a key visual, and a new original illustration by the light novels’ illustrator Aki.

On August 6, 2022, during the industry panel at Crunchyroll Expo 2022, Crunchyroll announced that it’ll be licensing the Sugar Apple Fairy Tale anime series. As mentioned above, the anime will premiere on an undisclosed date in 2023, so stay tuned for future announcements.
The Sugar Apple Fairy Tale anime series: What we know so far
Studio J.C. Staff (In Another World with My Smartphone Season 2) is producing the series.
The staff is, as follows:
- Youhei Suzuki — director
- Seishi Minakami — series composer
- Haruko Iizuka (Horimiya) — character designer
- Hinako Tsubakiyama — music composer
As far as seiyuu are concerned, it has been revealed that Yuka Nukui (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom’s Serina) will voice Ann Halford and Masaaki Mizunaka (Tokyo Revengers’ Keisuke Baji) will voice Shall Fen Shall/Shalle Fen Shalle (official English rendering of the character’s name hasn’t been revealed yet).
Additional cast members include Rie Takahashi as Mythrill Reid Pod and Tomoaki Maeno as Hugh Mercury.
An original illustration by the light novel series’ illustrator Aki was revealed yesterday alongside the anime adaptation info, to commemorate the news. The illustration features the two MCs, Masaaki and Shall Fen Shall, in an art style consistent with the Sugar Apple Fairy Tale light novel illustrations.
A Sugar Apple Fairy anime adaptation was first rumored to be in the works by Sugoi LITE — a name well-known to the Twitter anime fandom — on August 1, 2022.
However, at the time, no official sources were disclosed, so this is the first official announcement. The anime series was originally announced on October 1, 2021.
The Sugar Apple Fairy Tale light novels and manga series
Sugar Apple Fairy Tale (シュガーアップル・フェアリーテイル, Shugā Appuru Fearī Teiru) started out as a light novel series. Written by Miri Mikawa and illustrated by Aki, the series ran from March 2010 to February 2015. Amounting to 17 volumes, the light novel series was published by Kadokawa, under its Kadokawa Beans Bunko imprint.
The light novels inspired a short manga adaptation written by Miri Mikawa and illustrated by Alto Yukimura. The manga was serialized via Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume online magazine from November 2012 to October 2014. The individual chapters have been collected into 2 tankōbon volumes.
Another manga adaptation of the Sugar Apple Fairy Tale light novel series emerged in November 2021 and is still ongoing. It is being serialized via Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine Young Ace. Once again written by Miri Mikawa, the series is illustrated by Yozora no Udon. This title has been licensed by Yen Press, and so has the light novel series.
Yen Press describes the series’ plot thusly:
“Anne Halford is a candy crafter determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a Silver Sugar Master, a title bestowed only by royalty. In order to travel to the capital and realize her dream, she purchases Challe, a handsome but foul-mouthed fairy, as her bodyguard. Anne wishes to befriend her new companion, but in this kingdom where fairies are treated as property, Challe wants nothing to do with humans. Will this journey with Anne change his mind…?”
