The Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 release date is on July 3, 2023, the Summer 2023 anime season. The official title of the 2nd season is Masamune-kun’s Revenge R.

The 2nd season was originally scheduled to premiere in April 2023, the Spring 2023 anime season. However, the premiere of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R was pushed back due to the impact of COVID on the production schedule.

The anime TV sequel was originally confirmed to be greenlit for production back in April 2022. On November 25, 2022, the 2nd Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 PV trailer announced the premiere time frame.

As previously mentioned, the official title of Masamune-kun no Revenge Season 2 is Masamune-kun no Revenge R. The story will have Makabe Masamune still trying to enact his revenge plan on the beautiful Adagaki Aki in Paris only to have a French girl interfere.

The number of episodes hasn’t been announced yet. However, it’s possible that the second season will adapt the entirety of the remaining story all the way to the Masamune-kun’s Revenge manga’s ending and may even adapt the After School story arc. (See the manga comparison section below for more details.)

The initial announcement of Masamune-kun no Revenge Season 2 was made in a humorous way during April Fools’ Day 2022.

Masamune-kun no Revenge Season 2
Initially, the official Twitter page released a visual where a sign said, “Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 3 Production Decision.” A chibi Aki said, “Wait a minute. What are you doing!? We need a 2nd season before the 3rd!” Then a follow-up removed the Season 3 sign to reveal the actual Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 announcement. Pic credit: Twitter
A Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 trailer also previewed the second season on April 1, 2022.

The Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 OP (opening) theme song music “Please, please!” will be performed by Ayaka Ohashi, while the ED (ending) “twilight little star” is sung by ChouCho.

This article provides everything that is known about Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 (Masamune-kun no Revenge Season 2 / Masamune-kun’s Revenge R) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 English dub release date

Several years ago, Funimation released the Masamune-kun’s Revenge English dub. Crunchyroll was streaming the episodes as they were released in Japan.

After Sony purchased both Funimation and Crunchyroll it was announced that the two streaming platforms will be merging content onto Crunchyroll starting in Spring 2022. Thus, Crunchyroll will be streaming Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 in the future and will be responsible for any dubbed version.

Crunchyroll’s Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 English dub release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Why the Masamune-kun’s Revenge R release date is in 2023

As of the last update, any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the exact Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 release date. However, the production of the Masamune-kun’s Revenge R sequel was announced on April 1, 2022. On November 25, 2022, it was confirmed that the second season was coming out in Spring 2023. However, on February 16, 2023, the official website announced that the 2nd was being delayed until Summer 2023.

Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information.

Considering the timing of the initial announcement, and the fact that a trailer preview was shown off in addition to the announcement art, Anime Geek predicted back then that the Masamune-kun’s Revenge R release date will be in 2023.

By July 2022, this prediction seemed even more likely since the production staff released a new key visual but did not specify the release time frame, not even the year. If it was going to be released in Fall 2022 it’s very likely that information would have been announced already.

So, it wasn’t a surprise when the Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 release date was confirmed to be in Spring 2023. Unfortunately, it’s also not a surprise that COVID continues to play havoc with anime production schedules so a three-month delay until July 2023 isn’t too bad.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 studio and staff

Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 features a returning animation studio..

The first season of the anime TV series was produced by Japanese animation Studio Silver Link, which is known for other anime series such as Strike The Blood Season 5, BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, The Dungeon of Black Company, The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

In 2022, Silver Link also released The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody.

Studio Silver Link is also producing many anime sequels in the future. BOFURI Season 2Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World Season 2, The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 anime, and a 2023 My Next Life as a Villainess movie are all confirmed to be in production.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 1 was helmed by director Mirai Minato. He’s also been the Silver Link director for most of the studio’s recent projects, including BOFURI, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, The Dungeon of Black Company, and The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! He also directed the 2022 The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody and was the assistant director on The Misfit of Demon King Academy.

Writer Michiko Yokote (The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, Tribe Nine, Grimm, Call of the Night) wrote the series composition and she supervised the scripts that were written by her and Kento Shimoyama (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, Deep Insanity: The Lost Child, Shenmu The Animation).

Artist Yuuki Sawairi (Wise Man’s Grandchild, Dungeon of Black Company) and Kaori Satou (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World) were the character designers. Composer Tatsuya Katou (Dr. STONE, Sakugan) produced the music.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge manga’s ending compared to the anime

The story for the anime is based on the Masamune-kun’s Revenge manga by Japanese writer Hazuki Takeoka and Korean female artist Tiv. Serialized in Monthly Comic Rex from October 2012, the manga series ended with Volume 10 in July 2018. The final chapter was released on June 27, 2018.

A Masamune-kun’s Revenge OVA episode that was bundled with Volume 10 told part of the after story for the manga. Starting in September 2018, the creators launched a spin-off called Masamune-kun’s Revenge: After School which showed what happened to various characters after the main story ended.

North American publisher Seven Seas Entertainment handled the official Masamune-kun’s Revenge manga’s English translation. All 10 volumes were released in English as of May 12, 2020. The After School “Volume 11” was released in English in June 2020.

The problem with Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 1 is that it did not live up to its name… unless you read the Japanese title plainly in English as “no revenge”. The anime left fans hanging for years and Episode 12 ended with a karaoke singing competition that felt like filler content rather than a solid ending.

All in all, the ending of the first season corresponded to manga Volume 6: Chapter 29.

It was a decent stopping point since there was a quick reveal about a class trip that pointed to the Paris story arc.

With only four manga volumes left to adapt it’s very likely that Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2 will finish the main story. It may even cover the After School arc since it’s only one manga volume.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge 2 anime TV spoilers (plot summary/synopsis)

The next time audiences watch the Masamune-kun’s Revenge sequel, the characters will be arriving in Paris. It’s the city of romance and Masamune will be advancing his “Dead or Love Operation” since his school festival plan was an obvious bust.

His new plan quickly goes sideways when Masamune literally runs into an eyepatch-wearing French girl named Muriel Besson. She wants to learn to draw manga, but her stories are confusing to a Japanese audience, both historically and linguistically… one of her characters’ names literally translates to “fish balls”!

In order to fix her manga, Muriel desires authentic Japanese people to serve as reference points for a romantic comedy. What’s more, the French mangaka believes Masamune personifies the ideal image of a male Japanese high school student and she quickly demands that he become her manga model.

Worse, it’s an offer that Masamune can’t refuse because Muriel’s older brother is linked to the Yakuza. Their antics turn into a game of manga Inception since Masamune and Aki are forced to act out a romantic comedy so Muriel can understand how to write the perfect Japanese romantic comedy. Thus, Masamune finds himself stuck between Princess Cruelty and Mademoiselle Otaku.

Masamune is stumped by acting out a Japanese romance only to find out that Aki remembers the events of eight years ago completely differently. She confesses to him, confiding that she began overeating because she loved the young, chubby Masamune of her memories.

“That kid just wanted to be rescued from his bullying,” she told a very confused Masamune. “I was the only one who cherished our time together. I loved him. His chubby cheeks, plump stomach, everything. I cried it away, gorged myself on food, and I’ve been miserable ever since because my overeating hasn’t stopped.”

“If that’s true, why did you call me Piggy and drive me away?” Masamune asks Aki, blurting out his own secret. “Don’t act like the victim! You being left behind is just you reaping what you sow!”

The rest of the story is about how the two young high schools come to terms with their disparate memories. Will Masamune still seek his revenge by crushing her heart? How can Masamune win Aki’s heart at all if the counterfeit Masamune is standing in the way? Will the high calories of the Chubby Revival Plan kill off poor Masamune?

There are huge secrets being held by Gasou and the girl’s maid, Yoshino Koiwai, that will change everything for Masamune and Aki.

Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until the Masamune-Kun no Revenge Season 2 release date to watch what happens next. Stay tuned!
