The My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 anime TV show will have Yume going on the defensive as an old, first love for Mizuto is rekindled by a misunderstanding that gets out of control. But when will Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta Season 2 (Tsurekano Season 2) come out?

The studio and main staff making My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 haven’t been announced yet.

For the first season, the anime project was produced by Japanese animation company Studio Project No. 9,  which is best known in recent times for producing the Higehiro anime, Love After World Domination, Bottom-Tier Character TomozakiCHOYOYU!: High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World!, and the Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! anime.

In the future, it’s possible that Studio Project No. 9 will be working on Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki Season 2 since an anime sequel was confirmed in 2022, but not the format.

The first season of the My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex anime project was helmed by director Shinsuke Yanagi, whose history as a lead director is mostly tied to Project No. 9. For the studio he’s directed Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, Tenshi no 3P!, Momo Kyun Sword, and the aforementioned CHOYOYU! anime.

Writer Hitomi Mieno (pen name Deko Akao) wrote the series composition. She’s best known for her work on the Noragami anime series. In recent times, she has worked on Assassin’s Pride, Komi Can’t CommunicateSuppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?, Pokemon Journeys, The Case Study of VanitasThe Dungeon of Black Company, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, When Will Ayumu Make His Move?, and Tanmoshi: The Detective Is Already Dead (the production of Tanmoshi: The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 was confirmed in July 2022).

Character designer Katsuyuki Satou (Fire In His Fingertips Season 2) has worked on many anime projects but most of them have been hentai. Composer Hiromi Mizutani (CHOYOYU!, Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki) created the music.

The My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 OP (opening) and ED (ending) theme song music hasn’t been announced yet.

For the first season, the My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex OP “Deneb to Spica” was performed by DIALOGUE+, while the ED “Futari Pinocchio” was performed by harmoe.

The first season of My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex was streaming in Summer 2022 with English subtitles on Crunchyroll and VRV (not Netflix, Disney+, HIDIVE, Hulu, Funimation, or Amazon Prime Video).

The first season’s finale, My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Episode 12, will release on September 21, 2022.

The 12 episodes were released as three My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Blu-Ray/DVD volumes on October 26, 2022, November 30, 2022, and December 21, 2022, respectively.

This article provides everything that is known about My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 (My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 / Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta Season 2 / Tsurekano Season 2) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.

Tsurekano Season 2 release date predictions: Renewal uncertain?

As of the last update, Studio Project No. 9, Kadokawa, producers Sotsu/KlockWorx, or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 release date. Nor has the production of a My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 sequel been announced.

Once the news is officially confirmed this article will be updated with the relevant information.

In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate about when, or if, the Tsurekano Season 2 release date will occur in the future.

The My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend review scores have been good but not great. The nice thing about the story is that it defies the tropes of the RomCom genre by flipping the romantic progression on its head.

Rather than a slow drip-drip of romantic events that rarely reach the love confession stage by the end of the first season, these two lovebirds-turned-step-siblings have to deal with the awkward reality of having formerly dated as lovers only to become an instant family. It’s kind of like Domestic Girlfriend combined with the mind games of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War except instead of the first person to declare love being the loser, the first sibling to make a mistake and not act like a normal sibling is the (suddenly “younger”) loser.

The TV show also manages to surprise RomCom anime fans by subverting and reversing expectations based on situational comedy tropes. The story mixes the past and the present as the new siblings recall memories of how they came to be broken up in the first place. The problem is that amid the real romantic tension the story and brand of humor still suffers from the cringe factor that also plagues the Rent-A-Girlfriend anime series.

The main two leads are essentially a combination of characterization tropes since Mizuto is smart and calculating yet silent while Yume has a brother complex that influences how she reacts to everything. Supporting side characters like Akatsuki Minami is the bubbly nice girl while Kogure Kawanami is the chill male best friend of Mizuto.

But since the characters are likable and the animation is well-done you have to wonder if just the basic premise by itself is causing the anime to be review-bombed. After all, some people will have a negative visceral reaction to a story about “stepsiblings romance” no matter which direction it goes with the development of the premise.

For those who do watch, some people will watch the anime despite the title similar to how people used to pay to watch a train wreck, while others may watch it precisely because it catches their attention. In a nutshell, the story is a re-romance about two ex-lovers who must move past their shy and introverted past selves and find loving acceptance of their current selves, but the problem is that the boy’s current self is still in love with the girl’s past self. Although the sibling romance is the hook, it’s really a story of two ex-lovers who are trapped by their preconceived expectations of what their ideal partner should be like.

Whether or not such controversy had any negative impact, that did not stop the anime from giving a significant sales boost to the My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend light novel sales in Japan. The book series actually made the Oricon Top 20 list for July 2022. The only Summer 2022 anime to make that light novel popularity chart was Classroom of the Elite and the Overlord light novels, which unsurprisingly dominated the top spot for weeks.

On the other hand, the My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend manga sales were not good enough for the series to make it on Oricon’s Top 20 manga series chart for July 2022. To be fair, the only other Summer 2022 anime series to make that Oricon Top 20 chart were Call of the Night, Kingdom, and Ao Ashi. (We’re also predicting that Call of the Night Season 2Kingdom Season 5 and Ao Ashi Season 2 will happen in the future.)

To put this sales performance in perspective, in August 2020 the entire Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta series (including the physical light novels, manga, and digital copies) had 250,000 copies in circulation. By the end of January 2022, it had surpassed half a million copies in circulation. Since the light novels sold about 19.9k copies in July 2022, that’s about a 4 percent jump in sales in only one month. Keep in mind that Tsurekano Volume 9 came out on July 1, 2022, so any boost to monthly sales was also influenced by a new book release.

In addition, both light novel and manga sales are only an indicator of an anime series’ popularity in Japan, whereas global streaming revenue is the major factor. Unfortunately, if we use Crunchyroll’s popular anime list to judge the streaming performance the TV show did manage to make the list but it was rarely in the Top 10. Again, it’s possible that the title alone was offputting to many potential watchers.

Given all these factors the anime production committee is not guaranteed to have My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex renewed for a second season. We’ll just have to wait and see if Tsurekano Season 2 is greenlit for production in the future.

My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Season 2 English dub release date

Crunchyroll’s My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex English dub release date for the first season has not been announced. Nor has the My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex dub cast been confirmed. This article will be updated once the dubbed version is announced.

Presumably, now that Funimation is being phased out by Sony, Crunchyroll’s Tsurekano Season 2 English dub release date will be announced in the future after My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 has first premiered with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

Hopefully, future English dubbing will be faster once the COVID pandemic winds down and becomes endemic. In order to protect voice actors from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, they were forced to temporarily pause production or take extra safety precautions that resulted in slowed work.

Many English dubbing houses have experienced delays since voice actors often travel to the recording studio. By mid-2022 Crunchyroll began switching from remote recording to in-studio recording again (most of the work is done in their Texas studio).

My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex manga, light novel series compared to the anime

The story for the anime TV show started life in August 2017 as a My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex web novel series self-published on the Japanese Kakuyomu website (“Kaku” means to write and “yomu” means to read). The author is Kyousuke Kamishiro, who is best known for writing the Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest series.

Starting in December 2018, the Tsurekano web novel began being adapted as the Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta light novel series by the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint. The author is Kyousuke Kamishiro and the illustrator is Takayaki. As of July 1, 2022, the book was series was up to My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Volume 9.

Kamishiro teamed up with artist Rei Kusakabe to create the My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex manga adaptation. Serialized online in Nionico Seiga magazine since April 2019, the manga’s physical publication by Fujimi Shobo is up to Volume 4 as of May 9, 2022.

North American publisher J-Novel Club began digitally publishing the official My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex English translation in 2022. As of October 3, 2022, the English version of the light novel series was up to My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Volume 4.

Unfortunately, no one has announced the My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex manga’s English translation. However, there are fan translation projects online that were up to the seat exchange/lunch talk event chapters of manga Volume 4 as of August 2022.

The biggest difference between the anime and the light novels is that the books chapters switch the point of view between the two main narrators. The inner monologues play a crucial role in the presentation of the story since the point-of-view switching allows readers to more fully understand their personalities.

Regarding that matter, the anime more resembles the manga since it adapts the timeline from a single omniscient perspective where audiences get to hear both perspectives. That makes the storytelling more difficult for the anime/manga since it denies one of the main strengths of the light novels.

Otherwise, the anime was forced to condense the story based on the constraints of the episodic TV format in order to reach the best stopping point offered by the source material. That meant skipping some funny moments and shortening scenes.

For example, Episode 5 completely skipped the Christmas present scene from the ending of light novel Volume 1. The final chapter (which was adapted by manga Chapters 19, 20, and 21) had Mizuto, Yume, Minami, and Kawanami celebrate Christmas, read a book, and have lunch while talking about their past.

Even worse, the episode skipped the first two chapters of Volume 2 which meant that several scenes were cut by Episode 5 in order to skip ahead to Volume 2: Chapters 3 and 4. And by Episode 7 the anime finished adapting Volume 2: Chapter 7.

Episode 8 then skipped Volume: Chapter 1 where the mysterious Cockroach-kun scared Mizuto and Yume… while they were in bed together! Thankfully, that scene was merely shifted to Episode 10.

Oddly enough, Episode 9 was mostly anime original content. It expanded on the flashback scenes from light novel Volume 1.

All in all, as predicted the first season’s finale, Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta Episode 12, found a stopping point corresponding to light novel Volume 4: Chapter 8.

It’s the best stopping point since the embarrassment and the awkwardness of memories of the first kiss are explored during the family trip to the hometown of Mizuto’s father.

The biggest change in the anime was that most of light novel Volume 3 was outright skipped. Episode 10 did adapt parts of the cockroach incident, but the episode skipped ahead to Volume 3: Chapters 2 and 3. Episode 12 also adapted the school scene from Volume 3: Chapter 4. This meant the Kawanami x Minami story arc was missing, but the best stopping point was the end of Volume 4 so it was necessary to skim Volume 3.

The anime also skipped Volume 4: Chapter 6 about Kawanami and Minami’s date at the pool, but that was necessary since the missing content from Volume 3 provided the context for that chapter.

Despite the skipped content, the good news is that there is already plenty of source material available for making Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta Season 2. It’s always possible the second season could try and rework the skipped content from the Kawanami x Minami story arc back into the anime version.

The bad news is that English-only light novel readers who wish to read ahead of the anime will have to wait until 2023 when Volume 5 comes out. Even worse, the anime is far ahead of the manga so it will take several years before the manga catches up (although it’s still worth going back to the manga to read the scenes skipped by the anime).
