The much-anticipated anime adaptation of the Oshi no Ko manga series will debut on HIDIVE in 2023.

The news was announced at the HIDIVE Anime NYC panel on November 19, 2022.

There’s no word yet on when exactly the Oshi no Ko TV anime will premiere but we know a thing or two about it nevertheless.

Firstly, it has been confirmed that the idol TV anime will see the light of day in 2023. However, there are no specifics: not even the exact anime season has been revealed!

What has been confirmed is that the anime will debut with an extended 90-minute first episode.

The Oshi no Ko cast and staff

Daisuke Hiramaki and Chao Nekotomi are directing the series at Doga Kobo (My Senpai Is Annoying).

Hiramaki has previously worked on some rather successful anime titles, including the cult cyberpunk Ergo Proxy series. Nekotomi is known for his work on the Tokyo Revengers franchise, among other titles.

Jin Tanaka (The Misfit of Demon King Academy) is in charge of the series composition, whereas Kanna Hirayama (Rent-A-Girlfriend) is handling character design.

As for the cast, only Rie Takahashi has been revealed so far. She’ll be voicing the main character of the series, idol Ai Hoshino.

The English title is still unknown (the manga roughly translates as “My Idol’s Child”).

About the Oshi no Ko manga series

The Oshi no Ko anime is based on the eponymous manga series written by Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).

The series debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine on April 23, 2020. Shueisha is serializing the manga under its Young Jump Comics label. The series has over 3 million copies in circulation.

Yen Press has licensed the manga for an English-language release (trade paperback). Oshi no Ko Volume 1 will be out on January 17, 2023. The Japanese manga is up to Volume 9 as of October 19, 2022.

Oshi no Ko is available in English digitally via the Manga Plus platform.

The manga has won two major awards: first place in the 7th Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō (Next Manga Awards) in 2021 and another first place in the 46th annual Kodansha Manga Awards in the Best General Manga category (2022).

In February 2021, it was revealed in the 11th issue of the Weekly Young Jump magazine that Oshi no Ko would do a collaboration with Miki Yoshikawa’s A Couple of Cuckoos, but no follow-ups have been provided since.

Oshi no Ko offers a refreshing look at the idol industry

The plot centers on Ai Hoshino, an aspiring idol with a perfectly fake smile. Hoshino is hoping to build a prosperous career on lies, but there’s a twist.

Secretly, she decides to secretly give birth to her twins. What she’s unaware of, however, is that the doctor handling her pregnancy (Gorō) is a fan of hers.

To make things worse, just before Hoshino is to give birth, Gorō gets killed and promptly reincarnates with his memories intact… as Ai’s child, no less!

The plot seems refreshing in the flood of idol and isekai titles, so let’s hope the TV anime won’t disappoint.

Stay tuned for further announcements, including the Oshi no Ko 2023 premiere date!
