Either the Made In Abyss Season 3 TV show or a new movie is confirmed to be in production. On January 15, 2023, it was confirmed that an anime sequel was greenlit for production, but the format wasn’t specified.
The announcement trailer doesn’t give any specific details about the story since it relies on previously animated scenes from the first 2 seasons. However, the official Twitter used the movie camera emoji (🎥), which could be a hint that the sequel project will be Made In Abyss movie 4 (the first two films were compilation movies whereas movie 3 was Dawn of the Deep Soul).
A film would make more sense since the sequel will have Riko, Reg, Nanachi, “Prushka”, and now Immortal Princess Faputa continuing the journey down into both the 6th layer and 7th layer. Plus, in 2022 the 2nd season almost caught up with the source material in the manga, so a new movie could inject an anime original story that takes place during the time period when the group traveled downward.
The other possibility is that Made In Abyss movie 4 will adapt the next manga canon story arc by directly involving original creator in the anime project. While it’s unusual for an anime to continue a story before the manga chapters are released it’s not completely unheard of.
Of course, a film adaptation only works if the next story arc is short. Otherwise, Made In Abyss Season 3 will be necessary if the anime jumps ahead of the manga.
The official title for the second season was Made In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made In Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou). Assuming that the third season is named after the next major manga story arc, it could be named Made In Abyss: Capital of the Unreturned or Made In Abyss: The Curse Fleet or some other title.
The exact number of episodes or cours hasn’t been announced yet. What’s a “cour,” you might ask? For those unfamiliar with the lingo, a “cour” is a three-month block of TV broadcasting based on the physical seasons usually composed of 10 to 13 episodes.
Want to watch Made In Abyss streaming? Unfortunately, the anime series became a HIDIVE exclusive beginning in 2022 since Sentai Filmworks is the streaming licensor. In the past, the first season was streaming on Amazon Prime Video. But by time Made In Abyss Season 3 comes out in several years it’s possible the anime streaming wars will have changed the landscape.
The second season’s finale, Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12, was released at 2:30 PM on September 28, 2022. Rather than release Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 13, the finale was a 1-hour TV special that was also featured as part of a pre-screening event in Japan on September 25, 2022.
The Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12 release date normally should have been on September 21, 2022. However, on that day the Made In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun anime had a special program broadcast in its usual TV time slot in Japan.
The 12 episodes of the second season were released as two Blu-Ray/DVD box volumes. Volume 1 came out on October 26, 2022, while Volume 2 was released on December 23, 2022.
The Season 2 BD Volume 1 included a bonus mini anime episode called “Together with Papa”. It’s a bonus short story featuring Prushka and Bondrewd. In the past, Kinema Citrus also produced an OVA episode called “Maruruk’s Daily Life”, which featured the apprentice to white whistle Ouzen the Immovable.

Made In Abyss 3 release date predictions: Wait time depends on manga creator Akihito Tsukushi
As of the last update, Kinema Citrus, Sentai FilmWorks, or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the Made In Abyss Season 3 release date. However, the production of another Made In Abyss sequel was announced on January 15, 2023.
Once the news is officially confirmed this article will be updated with the relevant information.
In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate about when, or if, the Made In Abyss 3 release date will occur in the future.
It’s possible that the newer story arcs could be adapted into another Made In Abyss movie depending on how long the next story arcs end up being. And therein lies the biggest question: when will the Made In Abyss manga provide enough manga chapters for the anime TV show to continue?
The biggest obstacle to a quick turnaround is the relative lack of source material. Author Akihito Tsukushi often releases new chapters online “when it’s done” rather than sticking to a strict monthly release schedule.
After the manga launched in October 2012, the creator averaged about 8 chapters a year at first, but in 2019 only two chapters were released so the average as of August 2022 dropped down to only 6.5 chapters per year. Only five chapters were released in 2021, which included the last chapters adapted by the second season.
Yes, that means the anime’s second season caught up with the manga. The handful of new chapters released in 2022 and 2023 will eventually be adapted by Made In Abyss Season 3 (or a movie), but it’s going to be a very. Long. Wait.
The mangaka slowed down in 2022, only releasing 3 chapters. Similarly, only 3 chapters were released in 2023.
In the best-case scenario, mangaka Tsukushi could pick up the work pace, but even then the anime-only fandom’s descent into madness will fester for at least 3 to 5 years. Thus, it’s predicted that the Made In Abyss Season 3 release date will be in 2025 at the very earliest, but that scenario entirely depends on the manga creator.
It’s also possible that the story of the newer arcs won’t reach a good stopping point (or the Made In Abyss manga’s ending) within 20 chapters. One of the new arcs could be longer than the 22-chapter Hollows Village arc, which would require Made In Abyss 3 to be two cours. If that’s the case, just add several more years to the wait time…
Otherwise, the only major limitation is the availability of Studio Kinema Citrus. they’re not a big animation studio like MAPPA since they only release around 2 to 3 anime projects per year.
Unfortunately, the studio hasn’t officially confirmed too much about their future plans. My Happy Marriage Season 2 has been greenlit for production, but it’s not confirmed that Kinema Citrus will return for animating the sequel. It’s also possible that Kinema Citrus will be releasing The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4 in 2025.
Made In Abyss Season 3 English dub release date predictions
Sentai Filmworks has licensed the rights for the Made In Abyss English dub. The main characters Reg and Riko were played by Luci Christian and Brittany Lauda, respectively.

The Made In Abyss Season 1 English dub was originally available on HIDIVE. The Made In Abyss: Dawn Of The Deep Soul English dub release date in movie theaters was on April 13, 2020. Later on, HIDIVE began streaming the dubbed movie.
During Otakon 2022 on July 30, 2022, HIDIVE announced plans for dubbing the second season. The Made In Abyss Season 2 English dub release date was at 12:30 AM EST on August 31, 2022.
Unfortunately, the dubbing process for HIDIVE exclusives isn’t as fast as the Crunchyroll SimulDub team, which is either same-day or only a couple of weeks behind the English subs release.
As such, it’s predicted that the Made In Abyss Season 3 English dub release date will be at least a month after the initial premiere.
Made In Abyss manga compared to the anime’s second season
The winner of Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year for 2017 was based on the Made In Abyss manga series by mangaka Tsukushi. The manga has been serialized online in Web Comic Gamma since 2012 on a quasi-monthly basis.
When the first season ended in 2017, the manga had been collected in tankobon hardcover format up through Volume 6. By the time the second season began streaming in July 2022, the manga was only up to Made In Abyss Volume 11, which included up through Made In Abyss Chapter 63. By July 31, 2023, the manga was only up to Chapter 66.
Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the Made In Abyss manga’s English translation. The English Made In Abyss Volume 11 release date was on April 18, 2023.
In addition, ever since the anime become popular, fan-made scanlation translation projects have been quickly translating the Japanese panels into English.
Kinema Citrus has been extremely faithful to the manga. However, some concessions did have to be made in order to compact the beginning of the manga’s story into a single-cour season. Most of the manga chapters were fully adapted by the first season except for small parts of Chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, 18, and 23.
Since Made In Abyss “Episode 14” (the second half of the double-length Episode 13) ended with Chapter 26, the pacing of the first season was less than two chapters for every episode. The Bondrewd/Idofront story arc covered by the Made in Abyss the Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul (Gekijoban Made in Abyss: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei) movie ends with Chapter 38. The movie adapted around 12 chapters of manga content with a 2-hour runtime.
The second season picked up the story again by combining manga Chapters 48 and 39. There were 22 chapters in The Golden City of the Scorching Sun arc adapted by 12 episodes so once again the adaptation pacing was less than two chapters per episode.
The second season remained true to the source material but it changed how the story was presented. Rather than waiting until Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 7 to drop the entire flashback story of the Ganja Suicide Squad expedition on audiences, the first several episodes interleaved pieces of Vueko’s story in the first several episodes so the first Cave Raiders paralleled the journey of Riko’s party. That meant that pieces of Chapters 48 through 51 were weaved together into the main timeline of Made In Abyss Season 2 Episodes 1, 3, and 7.
The results were mixed. On one hand, revealing parts of Vueko’s backstory early took away from the sense of mystery since it was easy to guess which Hollows the humans had transformed into based on their character designs.
On the other hand, the story pacing was greatly improved since the flashback didn’t feel like such an info dump, which was very jarring to manga readers since they literally didn’t get to see the main characters for around a year due to the chapter release schedule. Rearranging the presentation of events to run in parallel with the past also definitely enhanced the emotional impact of certain scenes. The cliffhanger of Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 was especially painful.
The only other negative was that the second season used CGI for some of the characters. The 3D Belaf wasn’t bad at all, but the 3D effects for Majikaja were especially notable since the anime character design was less menacing in comparison to the manga art. Still, Kinema Citrus did a great job of seamlessly integrating the 3D models in such a way that the gruesome body horror was not lessened.
From watching Meinya being squeezed half to death to Maaa being balanced into pieces to Belaf feasting on the immortal Mitty to Faputa tearing the villagers into pieces the psychological terror was on full display. The creation of cartridges was horrifying, but it’s pure eldritch horror with the way that the infertile Irumyuui became the village through her innate desire to have children… and then everyone is feeding off her babies… while poor Vueko was trapped down below for many years… with nothing for company but the souls of Irumyuui’s eaten.
(The official Made In Abyss Twitter account was so based when it reminded everyone to “drink plenty of water” before Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 7 began streaming.)
The one negative to that episode was that it skipped showing Vueko having a physical relationship with the blue-haired girl, Pakkoyan. It was part of a montage that included Irumyuui’s pet getting eaten and other events.
It’s possible the quick moment was skipped since it was a sex scene and this relationship didn’t have time to be developed beyond a quick snapshot. Still, including the skipped scene could have given some context to why Irumyuui was talking about Vueko sleeping with many people in Episode 7. Without that context, anime audiences could have wrongly concluded Irumyuui was making an obscure reference to Vueko being sexually abused as a child.
The only other reason the missing context mattered was because the blue-haired girl became a one-eyed narehate who followed Vueko. Before Pakkoyan disintegrated, she showcased her love by throwing Vueko down the stairs so Vueko could live a little longer after being hit by the curse of the sixth layer. Anime-only audiences won’t understand that her willingness to sacrifice her life extended way beyond mere friendship, but including that random sex scene as a quick flashback in the middle of a dramatic moment would have been extremely jarring.
All in all, as predicted the second season’s finale, Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12, found a stopping point corresponding to the final page of manga Volume 10: Chapter 60.
It’s the perfect stopping point since it ends with a poignant moment before the journey deeper into the abyss resumes. The chapter also provides complete plot resolution to the Hollows village arc.

As previously noted, the bad news is that anime fans will have to wait several years before there are enough manga chapters for creating Made In Abyss Season 3.
The good news is that there were several chapters out when the second season concluded. Manga readers who wish to read ahead of the anime can jump straight to Made In Abyss Volume 11: Chapter 61, which officially came out in English on April 18, 2023.
Made in Abyss Season 3 studio and staff
The studio and main staff making Made In Abyss Season 3 haven’t been announced yet.
However, the third season will likely be produced by returning animation studio Kinema Citrus, which produced both TV anime seasons and the Made In Abyss movie (including the 2 recap films that adapted the first season). Kinema Citrus is also known for adapting The Rising of the Shield series and in Fall 2023 they released The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3.
The first and second seasons were helmed by director Masayuki Kojima, whose directorial credits include the anime classic Monster. He was assisted by the assistant director and episode director Hitoshi Haga (The Rising of the Shield Hero, Star Wars: Visions). Shinpei Yamashita was the anime producer.
Writer Hideyuki Kurata (Drifters, Goblin Slayer) handled the scripts and series composition. Artist Kazuchika Kise was the character designer (Ao Ashi anime episode animation director, Platinum End Part 2 director). Composer Kevin Penkin (Tower of God Season 2, Eden, The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3) and music producer Hiromitsu Iijima handled the music.

Reaching the bottom of the Abyss may take at least several more seasons, perhaps even requiring Made In Abyss Season 4 and 5 to reach the ending. But will fans like what they see staring back at them from the darkness?
“To the challengers who shall devote themselves to the Abyss, which even darkness itself cannot reach, the Abyss shall give you all. Life, death, curses, and blessings. The entirety of it all. At the end of your journey, what shall be the closure that you obtain?”
Riko just desires to find her mother, the White Whistle Lyza, and discover why the curse of the Abyss exists. Along the way, she hopes to learn the secrets of the Narehate and the relics, especially Reg the so-called Treasure of the Deep
With Vueko dead and the Hollows village destroyed, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi resume their journey down into the 6th layer. But it’s not long before Team Riko gains a 4th squad member since Nanachi notices that Faputa is following them kind of like a semi-domesticated cat. (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in an Abyss?)
Since Faputa had been capable of speaking with Prushka in her White Whistle form, Riko asks if Lyza’s White Whistle can also communicate. Not only can this White Whistle talk, it tells them that its name is Doni!
By relaying messages through Faputa, Riko learns that someone other than Lyza is waiting for them at the Pivotal Ring, but Doni refuses to say more. They determine that the Pivotal Ring must be the ring of light previously mentioned by Ozen.
In a dream state, Riko is able to talk with Prushka and they talk about various topics. Prushka attempts to communicate with Doni but is unable to do so.
Meanwhile, Reg is concerned about the great number of name tags he witnessed floating down from Orth, the city at the edge of the abyss. Since time passes slower the deeper your travel into the abyss it’s suspected that’s why so many tags fell at once, but Riko believes that the White Whistle leadership will ensure the safety of the surface town.
After collecting items from their travels and finding a Black Whistle delver, the group stumbles upon an artifact from a Delver named Cravali. (The manga spends an entire chapter introducing new characters and explaining how Cravali came to be in the 6th layer and also shows what is taking place on the surface.)
After finding this artifact, Nanachi realizes that the force field is weak since nearby creatures have scattered. She thinks it’s possible someone has set a trap so the group sends Faputa ahead as a scout.
That’s when they run into the cat-like Nishagora and the human female Tepaste, two characters who were introduced in the same manga chapter as Cravali. Nishagora is immediately angered when she sees the shape of Riko’s White Whistle since the cat woman thinks Riko’s group must be followers of the Abyssal Shine Maiden.
Nishagora is further upset when Riko claims that she is Lyza’s daughter since the delver knows that Riko was stillborn. But she calmed down after Riko explained the Curse-Warding Box and how Ozen helped Lyza carry the box to the surface where Riko was raised in Orth.
Nishagora is a member of the Curse Fleet delver troupe the Hail Hex, a group of delvers led by the White Whistle Srajo, who is known as the Sovereign of Mystery. Their goal is to reach the very bottom depths of the abyss.
Unfortunately, anime audiences will have to wait to watch the full reveal of the secrets of the sixth layer. Let’s just hope the Made In Abyss Season 3 release date is scheduled for 2025. Stay tuned, sosu!
