The NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a release date will be in January 2023, the Winter 2023 anime season.

On October 30, the production team (see below for a full cast list) revealed the Machine Pascal “Promotion File” trailer, which you can see immediately below.

Accompanying the trailer was a brand-new key visual detailing Pascal against the backdrop of a lush forest.

The key visual is as stunning as we expect the TV anime adaptation to be, so take a good look at it… in fact, enjoy the overall vibe!

It has been confirmed that Pascal will be voiced by Aoi Yuuki (Spy Classroom’s Monika) once again. The latter means that miss Aoi also voiced the character in the video game.

Pascal is a crucial character in the NieR:Automata gate. Normally being an NPC (non-player character), Pascal transforms into a playable character in Route C. Although a Machine, Pascal is a highly intellectual pacifist who is interested in the history of humankind, human philosophy, and machine life forms.

About the NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a anime series adaptation

The news that the NieR: Automata game will be getting a TV anime adaptation was confirmed in October when the Promotion File 003: Bunker trailer was revealed by Aniplex.

The TV anime adaptation was originally announced earlier in February.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a previously revealed trailers and visuals for 2B and 9S and for YoRHA Squadron.

As for the staff behind the upcoming series, Ryouji Masuyama (Blend S) is directing the TV anime alongside Nier video game director Yoko Taro who developed the video game that inspired the anime adaptation.

A-1 Pictures is producing the series.

Additional staff members include Jun Nakai (chief animation director & character designer) and MONACA (music composer). MONACA previously composed a soundtrack for Assassin’s Pride.

As regards cast members, the good news is that several key staff from the original video game will be reprising their roles for the TV anime, as follows:

  • Yui Ishikawa as 2B
  • Natsuki Hanae as 9S
  • Hiroki Yasumoto as Pod 042
  • Kaoru Akiyama as Pod 153
  • Chiaki Kanou as Commander White
  • Keiko Isobe as Operator 6O
  • Meari Hatsumi as Operator 21O

About the NieR: Automata RPG video game

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is an adaptation of the NieR:Automata action RPG developed by PlatinumGames of Bayonetta fame that was initially published by Square Enix on February 23, 2017, for the PlayStation 4 in Japan. Eventually, the game was made available in other territories and for additional platforms (Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows PC).

Nier video game director Yoko Taro has been quoted as saying that the “Ver 1.1a” was added to the TV anime title due to the game being “a story we created to be a game, so copying it as is wouldn’t make an interesting story for an anime.”

The game itself takes place thousands of years after 2010’s Nier and focuses on a group of androids who are fighting Machines in an attempt to reclaim Earth.

Steam provides additional details. The video game digital distribution service’s NieR:Automata synopsis reads:

“NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines. Humanity has been driven from the Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a final effort to take back the planet, the human resistance sends a force of android soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now, a war between machines and androids rages on… A war that could soon unveil a long-forgotten truth of the world.”
