Anime fans have even more to look forward to in the future as two new Adult Swim anime series are coming: a Rick and Morty anime spinoff and a new series called Ninja Kamui.
Several news platforms broke the announcement this morning. Adult Swim has since announced the titles on their Twitter platform as well.
Anime lovers new and old know that Adult Swim is no stranger to premiering and promoting popular imported titles, like the recent Crunchyroll collaboration Fena: Pirate Princess.
Both newly announced titles are currently in production. They will premiere on Adult Swim and the HBO Max streaming service.
What will the Rick and Morty anime be about?
The first series announced by Adult Swim was Rick and Morty: The Anime. Considering the mass popularity of the Adult Swim original series, most potential viewers will already have an idea of what to expect from these beloved characters.
Still, it isn’t expected to be a shot-for-shot anime adaptation of the original series, but a spinoff.
According to the director, Takashi Sano, “The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion. It’s such a life-affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”
Fans of the Rick and Morty series will remember that Adult Swim released two previous shorts that utilized anime-style animation and were directed by Sano. However, this series is said to be its own standalone work and will consist of 10 original episodes.
What will Ninja Kamui be about?
Adult Swim also announced another new anime series will be joining their lineup. This series, entitled Nina Kamui, will be an action and adventure series from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 director, Sunghoo Park.
The series will follow Joe Higan who is a Nukenin – a former ninja who escaped his clan and is hiding from his violent past in rural America with his family. One night, he is ambushed by a team of assassins from his former organization who exact bloody retribution on Joe and his family for betraying their ancient code.
Rising from his seeming “death,” Joe will re-emerge as his former self – Ninja Kamui – to avenge his family and friends. Kamui is a 21st-century ninja, a shadowy anachronism who pits his ancient skills against high-tech weaponry with brutal finesse. He must face off against trained assassins, combat cyborgs, and rival ninjas to bring down the very clan that made him.
Park himself said about the series, “This is a story I’ve always wanted to tell. Transgression and punishment of a ninja who loses everything and goes out for revenge, and what lies at the end of his road. I am very excited about this new project and hope fans will be too.”
