The Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie release date has been confirmed for April 2, 2022, the Spring 2022 anime season.

A recent tweet from the official anime Twitter account has posted both a trailer for the series and confirmed the Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san release date. The series will be streaming on both Funimation and Crunchyroll.

Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie is an anime series based off of the manga of the same name by Keigo Maki, known for its striking expressions and beautiful artwork. The series follows Shikimori and Izumi, a couple, as they struggle to express how much they love each other. Izumi, prone to danger, always seems to find himself a tight spot, and it’s up to his super-cool girlfriend to melt his heart with her well-timed words.

The series has sold over 1.4 million copies in Japan as of 2021 and began serialization in Kodansha’s Manga Pocket website and app back in 2019.

The first official trailer shows off the first chapter of the anime, where Shikimori saves her boyfriend from getting hit by a car, as well as a smattering of scenes from other points in the manga (chapter five, chapter seven, chapter sixteen) as he grapples with whether he finds his girlfriend Shikimori cute, cool, or both.

Who is the studio behind the Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie adaptation?

The studio behind the Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie adaptation is Doga Kobo, known for their work on Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, YuruYuri, Umaru-chan, Love Lab, and the upcoming Chiikawa adaptation.

They’re characterized by their expressive animation and focus on moe, romcoms, comedy, and yuri anime. With that focus, it will be interesting to see how they tackle the animation of Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie, considering how much of the series revolves around Shikimori’s cool expressions and practiced poses.

Who is the cast behind the adaptation?

Saori Onishi (Saekano) will be voicing the titular Shikimori, with Shuichiro Umeda (Dawn of the Witch) as Izumi, Rina Hidaka (Slime Reincarnation) as Hachimitsu, Misato Matsuoka (Eizouken) as Nekozaki, and Nobuhiko Okamoto (Bakugo, My Hero Academia) as Inuzaka. Ryota Itoh (My Senpai Is Annoying), a veteran of Doga Kobo, will be serving as the series director, while Yoshimi Narita (My Senpai Is Annoying) will serve as the lead scriptwriter.

All in all, the current cast and animation for the series seems to look great — it’ll be interesting to see if Doga Kobo can follow up their success from My Senpai Is Annoying with Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie this season.
