A new Netflix original anime movie is on the horizon! WIT Studio’s Bubble will start streaming worldwide on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

Bubble will be released on Netflix on Thursday, April 28, 2022. It’ll hit Japanese theaters a few weeks later, on May 13, 2022. The film also had an early screening at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2022.

Bubble is directed by Attack on Titan director Tetsuro Araki, and centers around an original script written by Puella Shoujo Madoka Magica’s Gen Urobochi. In addition, it features character designs from Death Note’s Takeshi Obata and music composition by Kill La Kill’s Hiroyuki Sawano.

The movie boasts a similarly star-studded lineup of voice actors. Voice acting talents include: Mamoru Miyano, Yuuki kaji, Jun Shison, Alice Hirose, and Tasuku Hatanaka.

What is the Bubble anime’s story about?

Bubble is an original story, loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. It takes place in an abandoned Tokyo, shortly after a bizarre event plunged the city into chaos.

One day, mysterious bubbles rained down from the sky. These bubbles somehow broke the laws of gravity and isolated Tokyo from the rest of the world–trapping it in a bubble of its own.

As a result, the city becomes a playground for young people separated from their families. They form parkour teams and navigate a destroyed Tokyo, jumping off of bubbles and buildings alike.

Subsequently, the youths must fight to survive in a world where resources are growing increasingly scarce.

The story follows Hibiki, a gifted–but reckless–ace known for his risky style of play. During one of his outings, he messes up a maneuver and falls into the gravity defying sea. Uta, a girl with peculiar powers, saves his life.

Shortly after, the pair hear a strange sound that is only audible to them.

Netflix Anime released a first look at the characters.

Who is Uta? What’s causing the mysterious sound? Above all, where did the bubbles come from in the first place?

At any rate, one thing’s for certain. Their encounter will lead to a revelation that will change the world.

Who is behind Bubble?

As previously mentioned, WIT Studio is handling the animation production. The movie itself is the result of a collaboration between Netflix and anime studios BONES and Production I.G (the latter being WIT Studio’s sister company).

The streaming giant announced the collaboration back in 2018. In order to strengthen its animation lineup, Netflix has been making an effort to feature more high-quality and original anime content.

The Bubble trailer was released in December 2021.

Keeping in line with WIT Studio productions, such as Attack on Titan and Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, Bubble promises to have stunning visuals and dynamic animation.

Bubble comes to Netflix on April 28, 2022. Are you going to tune in?
