The Fall 2022 anime season is shaping up to have some strong releases such as a sequel to the Bleach anime and the My Hero Academia Season 6 anime. Fan’s of the 2017 light novel Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Kattemimashita have a treat in store for them as well with an anime adaptation scheduled for this October!

What’s been confirmed thus far is that Studio Maho Film — the studio behind Winter 2022’s In the Land of Leadale anime — and director Kumiko Habara will lead the production. What’s unknown is how closely the anime will stick to the light novel and manga plotline. The trailer featured scenes based on manga panels, but aside from the change of a few names (which may largely be translation discrepancies), it’s hard to know for certain.

Luckily, three members of what will undoubtedly be a strong voice cast have been announced! Playing the role of the main protagonist Aileen Lauren Dautriche — the villainous daughter — is Rie Takahashi, best known for her role as Emilia in Re:Zero. Goblin Slayer fans will likely recognize the voice of the helmet-clad slayer himself, Yuichiro Umehara, as the demon king. And the crown prince will be played by none other than Toshiki Masuda, known recently for his role as Kirishima in Boku no Hero Academia.

What is the plot of I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss

A young girl, terminal in her hospital bed, uses otome games to escape from harsh realities. One day as she wakes, she finds herself in a familiar scene: crown prince Cedric Jeanne Elmir is calling off the engagement between him and his betrothed. Except, this time, the protagonist is playing the role of the villainous ex-betrothed, Aileen Lauren Dautriche.

Enraged and humiliated to be publicly rejected in front of the entire court, Aileen flees the castle before she can be exiled. With the memories of the game’s plot in her mind, she knows what needs to be done to avoid the bad ending route. And that’s what leads her to seek the help of the demon king Claude Jeanne Elmir — brother of her former betrothed.

When Aileen arrives at the demon king’s castle, all signs point for her to turn back. Known to rule over the land’s monsters and for having a furious temper that calls upon natural disasters, King Claude is no simple ally to obtain. But despite the obvious threat, Aileen approaches the demon king and demands that he marry her.

Where can I catch up on the plot before the Fall 2022 anime release?

Based on a web novel by the same name, I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss received a light novel adaptation in 2017. To read the light novel in eBook format, pick up the first two volumes on Book☆Walker. Unfortunately, the novels have never been officially translated into English in paperback, but Japanese readers can pick up all nine volumes at retailers such as AmazonJP, Kadokawa, and more.

In 2018, Comp Ace — the publisher of the Overlord and Youjo Senki manga series — serialized Akuyaku Reijou nanode Last Boss wo Kattemimashita as a manga. Similar to the light novel release, obtaining a copy may prove difficult for non-Japanese readers. Hopefully, that will change after the release of the fall 2022 anime. But luckily, there’s a translated eBook available. Those wanting to pick up all three volumes of the manga can do so at AmazonJP, Book☆Walker, and other retailers.
